Would Jon Gruden be a good fit in L.A.?

As the coaching search continues for the Los Angeles Rams, household names such as Jon Gruden have been linked to the team. After all, owning a Super Bowl ring as a coach tends to rise your stock. However, is Gruden a good fit for the Rams?

Let’s ignore the fact that Gruden recently mentioned on ESPN’s Mike and Mike podcast that he has “no intentions of coaching.” Minds can be persuaded, and it’s doubtful that Gruden is done with coaching forever. If any team can lure Gruden back to coaching, it would be the Rams.

First, if Gruden is truly at or near the top of the Rams’ wish list, then general manager Les Snead and owner Stan Kroenke will need to pay him some serious cash. It’s likely Gruden will demand to be one of the highest paid coaches in the league. Kroenke’s cash is a great starting point, but the Rams do have other components to keep Gruden interested.

For one thing, Gruden did coach in California before with the Oakland Raiders, and the Rams did just move back to Los Angeles. Gruden doesn’t mind the spotlight, and he might be a perfect fit for a city that will keep a close eye on him. He’s so used to the media that he became a member of it.

Second, Gruden has also made it no secret that he admires some of the Rams players such as Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald. Gruden did have some stellar defenses with both the Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had a hand in coaching Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp and getting the opportunity to mentor a beast like Donald could be an intriguing thought. Gruden alongside defensive coordinator Gregg Williams could improve the defense. The Rams defense may not be as strong as past years, but it’s still talented enough to reach an elite level if used correctly and adding a few more players, particularly at linebacker and cornerback.

Finally, Gruden hitched a ride on the Jared Goff hype train, even stating several times that he would love to coach Goff. That’s great news for the Rams, because Goff could use some proper guidance. The thing is, Gruden appears to know how to evaluate quarterbacks, but coaching them is still a question. Of the quarterbacks he worked with as a head coach, only Rich Gannon really thrived. Brad Johnson did have a great season with Gruden while in Tampa Bay, but Johnson and Gannon were both veteran quarterbacks.

Gruden didn’t successfully develop a younger quarterback as a head coach. Also, both the Raiders and the Buccaneers had mature offensive units. With the Rams, he will have a young offensive unit across the board, one that still needs to learn the fundamentals.

While hiring Gruden would create a media frenzy to start the upcoming season, he wouldn’t be a perfect hire. There are still too many unknowns about Gruden’s coaching, particularly on offense, which is a huge concern. If Gruden is somehow lured away from his current glamorous occupation, the Rams must sign a proven offensive specialist as an offensive coordinator. Personally, I have mixed feelings about Gruden. I appreciate his attention to detail and his love for smashmouth football. That said, with the many variables and the amount of money it would take to hire him, I just don’t think he will be worth the cost in the end. However, I wouldn’t lose sleep over hiring Gruden either.
