Reports have surfaced that Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has become the frontrunner to become the new head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. However, many fans don’t know much about him.

Shanahan, 37, is a second generation coach. Kyle is the son of former Los Angeles Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. Before being named Falcons’ offensive coordinator in 2015, Kyle served in the same position with the Cleveland Browns’ in 2014, and under his father with the Redskins from 2010 to 2013. He also had a two-year stint with the Houston Texans in 2008 and 2009.

After assuming his current position with the Falcons last year, Shanahan transformed a mediocre Falcons offense into one of the best in the NFL in his second season with the team. With the benefit of having an elite running duo like Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman at his disposal, Shanahan helped create a powerful, balanced offense under quarterback Matt Ryan.

Shanahan’s aggressive style of spreading out the offense, especially on first down, forces opposing defenses to sit back and wait for a potential playaction pass. Add to that two talented running backs and opposing defenses are having headaches trying to slow down Ryan and company.

As a result, the 2016 Falcons offense has led the league with 33.5 points per game and the most yards per play at just over 6.6 YPP. They are third in pass yards at 296 yards per game and eighth in rush yards per game at 116. Matt Ryan has produced MVP-like numbers this season, including a 114.1 QBR and a 68.6% completion percentage through 14 games this season. Julio Jones has recorded 1,313 yards with one game to go in the season, including seven games off 100-plus receiving yards, despite missing two games.

The Rams appear to have zeroed in on Kyle Shanahan as a top target to replace the fired Jeff Fisher as head coach. The challenge for the Rams is to convince Shanahan that he can repeat his performances in Los Angeles with the personnel that they have.
