Week 14 Preview: Breaking down the Philadelphia Eagles defense against the L.A. Rams offense

“Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.”-Sun Tzu

To understand how to be successful on offense in the NFL, you must understand your opponent. Study their strengths and most importantly their weaknesses. The decision on where to precisely attack is all dictated by the commander. When it comes to the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles defense, there aren’t many weakness. Here’s a look at one of the NFL’s best defensive units:

According to NFL.com, Eagles defense rank in the following categories:

YDS: 3rd             Pass: 16th           Rush: 1st        PTS: 6th

The 2017 Eagles recorded on the best starts in team history with a 10-2 record. Led by MVP candidate Carson Wentz, their “Red Option/ West Coast Offense” keeps their opponents guessing on every play. The Eagles stellar defense features their fantastic pass rushers lead by Fletcher Cox, Vinny Curry, Timmy Jernigan, and Brandon Graham. Philadelphia does a solid job rotating in rookie sensation Derek Barnett and former Ram Chris long. Together, the Eagles front four stays fresh throughout all four quarters.

The second level of the defense focuses on speedster and highly athletic Mychal Kendricks, and Nigel Bradham. They provide solid backing for the aggressive defensive line. Finally, there is a third level of the defense – secondary. The Eagles landed a steal in “Green Goblin” Jalen Mills when they selected him in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Experts projected him to be a second rounder.

The unit also features former Rams safety Rodney Mcleod, Pro Bowler Malcom Jenkins, and respected veteran Ronald Darby. This defense is extremely talented across the board and shows it by moving to the football and forcing opposing offenses into making mistakes. A couple of adjustments will help the 2018 Eagles’ defense a Super Bowl-caliber one.

What does this mean for the Rams offense?

With the Eagles defense ranking at the top in nearly every category, there seems to be some inflation in those stats with the competition they have faced. They played Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins with a depleted offensive line, mistake-prone Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, and New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning with no running game. I can keep going. What about the L.A. Chargers’ Philip Rivers, whose team was struggling at the time? What about a 49ers team that threw C.J. Beathard to the wolves? Should I even mention Brock Osweiler, Dak without Zeke, and rookie Bears QB Mitch Trubisky?

None of these teams were in contention when they played the Eagles. Philadelphia won the Giants and Chargers games by two points. Their toughest opponent came this past Sunday night against Russell Wilson in Seattle, and the Eagles’ poor secondary was exposed. Call it a bad game, but Seattle virtually had zero running game.

According to NFL.com, Rams offense rank in the following categories:

YDS: 4th      Pass: 7th      Rush: 14th     PTS: T-1

The Los Angeles Rams shocked the NFL world with their playmaking ability stemming from the mind of coach Sean Mcvay. The Rams offense is the toughest test the Eagles will face thus far. Philadelphia must prepare for a dynamic running back in Todd Gurley, a deep receiving corps led by slot juggernaut Cooper Kupp, and a group of tight ends capable of opening up the middle of the field. That’s not to mention that they must cover the third level with Sammy Watkins blowing the lids off teams’ secondaries. Yes, the Eagle defense sits among the best in the NFL, but when it comes to stopping the Rams’ offensive blitzkrieg, this is their toughest task yet.
