The St. Louis Rams should make a play for Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles

There has been some buzz lately about the St. Louis Rams expressing interest in Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Nick Foles. The thought came into place after sources said that the Eagles were interested in trading up in the 2015 NFL Draft for quarterback prospect Marcus Mariota. If there is even the slightest possibility that this trade can happen, the Rams need to pull the trigger.

We have to think about the identity of this current Rams team. It’s young, talented and has the capability to move on to the next level if they can fill in some crucial positions, and quarterback is undoubtedly one of the biggest needs. Free agency will not help the Rams at quarterback, they don’t have the time to develop a younger quarterback in the draft and Sam Bradford is looking more and more like the best option. This is a scary thought considering Bradford is recovering from his second ACL tear in two years.

Foles has an impressive resume coming from Philadelphia. In three seasons, he made one Pro Bowl appearance and recorded a total of 6,753 passing yards, 46 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and had a completion percentage of 61.6 percent.

The Rams, as a whole, are designed to be speedier offense. Foles’s presence as a mobile quarterback could free up receivers like Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, which is something they haven’t been able to do. The threat of Foles going on the run will keep defenders on their toes. He is capable of targeting receivers like Kenny Britt and Jared Cook on mid-range passes and has even been known to throw the deep ball from time to time. Bottom line, Foles is exactly the playmaker the Rams need.

Now the major question is how to acquire him? This scenario is best described as “easier said than done.” First of all, the only way the Eagles would remotely consider the trade is by making sure that the can acquire the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. It’s going to take a RGIII-like trade in order to pry that pick away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who could also use a quarterback.

Obviously, the Eagles don’t have much to barter with since they have 20th overall pick in the first round. This is where the Rams could help since they possess the 10th overall selection. The Rams must do whatever they can to help make sure the Eagles can take the top pick in the draft even if it means surrendering the first round pick all together. A small price to pay considering that the Rams would be acquiring a proven veteran quarterback.

Of course, there is a limit to how much the Rams can contribute to this trade. If the Eagles are asking for future first round selections, the asking price is just too high and they should look for other solutions. The Rams could offer Sam Bradford to see if the Eagles might interested in swapping quarterbacks. A change of scenery might be a good thing for both quarterbacks.

This scenario is unlikely, but stranger things have happened. You just never know when a general manager like Les Snead is in the front office and has mastered the art of “wheeling and dealing.”
