The St. Louis Rams drafted four offensive linemen during the 2015 NFL Draft. One of their most interesting picks was Andrew Donnal, who was selected in the fourth round (119th overall). The Rams are lacking depth at offensive line, so it is likely he will make the roster. That said, if Donnal proves himself during training camp and the preseason, he may eventually earn a starting role.
Donnal is a versatile lineman, who played both offensive guard and offensive tackle while at Iowa. He has an enormous body frame, standing at 6’6” and weighs 313 pounds. He can continue to play both positions, because of his size, but he will likely take more reps as a tackle for depth purposes.
Part of the reason Donnal was a Day 3 prospect is because he needs to gain more strength in his lower body. He struggles to drive defenders backward, which can be a problem on the next level when the defenders are bigger, faster and stronger. Donnal will also need to work with the coaching staff to improve his hand placement. He doesn’t adjust fast enough, especially when bull-rushed, which will either leave an open target on the quarterback or he will be called for a holding penalty.
Donnal isn’t the strongest lineman on the field, but that can be adjusted in the weight room. What will keep Donnal on the field is his persistence. He never gives up on plays and blocks until the whistle is blown. He also doesn’t mind making blocks downfield. From a technique standpoint, Donnal does a great job at blocking in run and pass plays.
Donnal will receive opportunities if he’s hungry enough. His focus should be strengthening his body and learning the playbook. If he can successfully do this, the Rams may have quality depth and a perhaps a potential starter in the future.
