The L.A. Rams were absolutely massacred by the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, and I’ve been tasked with listing the positives of the game. The list goes as follows: the game ended. That’s all folks. Survey says that was the number one answer. They were the weakest link, goodbye. All jokes aside, there were a few positives that can be misconstrued as satirical in nature, so my apologies in advance.
Punter Johnny Hekker is a Pro Bowl lock
The Rams need at least one Pro Bowler right? Well Hekker punted 10 times for 431 yards and averaged about 43.1 yards per punt. He was easily one of the Rams’ top performers.
The defensive line still looks solid
The defensive line wasn’t perfect, but it made a ton of plays in the backfield. People will immediately bring up the score, but two things: First, I said the defensive line, not the entire defense. Second, yes they did allow a ton of rushing yards, but they were constantly on the field. The Rams offense could not maintain a drive, which meant the defensive line got tired, and it resulted in the 49ers driving and scoring.
Alec Ogletree takes over the middle
Ogletree made 11 tackles and was all over the field. All things considered, I thought he did a solid job. Former middle linebacker James Laurinaitis was considered the tackling machine, but it appears that Ogletree can be that guy too. His covering skills will need some adjustments though.
The Rams haven’t extended Jeff Fisher’s contract yet
It was blatantly obvious that one of the biggest issues one the field was coaching. The playcalling was atrocious, the players were uninspired and the team as a whole lacked discipline. Quite frankly, the thought of extending his contract is insulting not only to the team, but to the fans that paid good money to see the Rams. Congrats Fisher, you were tired of the “7-9 bull—-,” and the Rams will be lucky to see a single win if the play on the same level as they did Monday night. “Hard Knocks” made me think better of Fisher, but reality set in during this game.
The Rams haven’t extended Les Snead’s contract
I am torn on general manager Les Snead, because love him or hate him, he has done good with this team too. He has brought in guys like Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, Ogletree and more. But this offseason he was partially responsible for destroying what was a decent team. He failed to properly address the wide receiver position, failed to properly address the secondary, and failed to secure quality linebacker depth. He also overspent on rookie Jared Goff, only to start Case Keenum, the quarterback nobody was confident in starting this season in the first place. That was the recipe for destroying the team.
That’s about all I have for the positives of the Rams’ first game of the 2016 season. I’m fairly sure I didn’t miss anything, but let me know in the comments if I missed anything.
