The Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles all exposed the Los Angeles Rams on both sides of the ball over the past three weeks.
In Detroit, the Rams looked disinterested in a lackluster victory. On Sunday Night Football in Chicago, the Rams got their behind kicked by the Bears defense. Finally, the Rams looked out of sorts back home in a loss to Philadelphia. Suddenly, both the players and the coaches are making careless mistakes in abundance. The offense has looked woeful, and the defense has been ineffective.
What in the world has happened to Jared Goff?
Let’s be honest. Jared Goff has struggled throughout the last three games. Statistically speaking, he has been the second worst QB in the league. Only Washington’s Mark Sanchez has been worse. Goff has suddenly reverted back to his rookie year form. He’s forcing his throws into double coverage and taking far too many sacks. Goff is even fumbling away footballs deep in enemy territory while trying to make a play. Throwing for 54% while getting picked off seven times in three games all but guarantees defeat.
The offensive line is not helping out Goff much either
The offensive line did a masterful job through the first 11 weeks at protecting Jared Goff. They gave him all the time he needed to make the appropriate decision in the pocket. Unfortunately, the Rams’ offensive line came back from the break out of sync and overwhelmed. If the offensive line cannot regain its original form before their first postseason game, the Rams will be a one-and-done team in the playoffs again.
Where has Aaron Donald been the past two weeks?
Opposing teams have figured out how to slow down Donald enough to make him more discreet at the line of scrimmage during the last two games. The Rams failed to sack Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on Sunday night. Teams double and triple-teaming Donald have kept their quarterback upright.
In the Sean McVay era, The Rams are 5-7 when Donald does not get a sack and 16-0 when he does. Chicago and Philadelphia successfully erased Donald from the past two games. Ndamukong Suh, Cory Littleton and Samson Ebukam have not stepped up. It is easy to see where the opposing offfensive lines will focus, which is on Donald. Stop Donald, stop the Rams’ pass rush.
The coaching staff has to take some risks. Teams are figuring out the Rams on both sides of the ball. They must make both the offense and defense unpredictable again. Todd Gurley still mans the running back position. Teams cannot stop the Rams when Gurley is used properly. They have two weeks to turn it around, or face the prospect of being one and done again in the playoffs.
