The Los Angeles Rams hire Eric Henderson as defensive line coach

The Los Angeles Rams hired former Los Angeles Chargers assistant defensive line coach Eric Henderson on Friday, February 22. Henderson, 36, will take the reigns as the new Rams defensive line coach, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport Friday.  He spent two seasons with the Chargers and worked with star defensive ends Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram.

Henderson replaces Bill Johnson, who coached on the Rams’ staff for two seasons. Johnson, 63, spent almost 40 years coaching. There is no official word yet as to why the Rams are moving on from Johnson. The move comes as a surprise given Johnson’s past track record.

Henderson’s hire appears may be part of a youth movement. He is popular in the Chargers’ locker room. Players like Ndamukong Suh, Corey Liuget, Brandon Mebane, Damion Square and Darius Philon are free agents. Henderson may be able to persuade some of them to join the Rams.

Henderson took to social media right away with his enthusiasm for the new role, and he’s already tweeting L.A. Rams logos. His profile description is changed to say the following, “Defensive Line Coach for the Los Angeles Rams.”

Henderson is a New Orleans native. He played at Georgia Tech and spent some time with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008.  Henderson began his coaching career as a defensive assistant in 2012 at Georgia Military College. He spent 2016 as the defensive line coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) before joining the Chargers.
