The Los Angeles Rams have reportedly added former Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Joe Barry as an assistant head coach/linebackers coach, according to Fox Sports writer Peter Schrager. Also, joining the staff is former New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson for the same position as per Alex Marvez, NFL Insider.
Barry worked with the recently hired Rams head coach Sean McVay for the past two seasons in Washington, and had mixed success as a defensive coordinator. He will be asked to work with the newly appointed defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips in developing the Rams defense. The Rams particularly will need help with the linebacker corps since it was spread thin due to the previous scheme.
Johnson was one of several coaches the New Orleans Saints had dismissed after ranking near the bottom in many defensive categories this season. Johnson had been with the Saints since 2009, and helped the Saints win Super Bowl XLIV. Johnson will now have access to one of the best defensive lines in the league.
The Rams are completely overhauling the coaching personnel so more changes are likely to come. Although, it was reported earlier that special teams coach/interim head coach John Fassel is likely to return.
