One of the bright spots for the Los Angeles Rams this year has surprisingly been at wide receiver. This is hard to believe considering the struggles in the passing game and the entire offense. However, it is undeniable how well the top two receivers in Kenny Britt and Brian Quick have done so far.
Through eight games this year, Britt has 37 receptions, for 584 yards and three touchdowns. Those are impressive numbers, and with eight games left, he will far surpass his career high of 775 yards that he earned back in 2010 with the Tennessee Titans. Best of all, he has limited his dropped passes this season and is easily the most consistent player on offense.
Britt looks like a legitimate No.1 receiver; he is putting his full effort into his gameplay. He’s fighting for extra yards, blocking when he can, creating separation from defenders and helping the rest of the passing offense by drawing extra coverage. Britt is even attacking the football by waiting and coming back for the football whenever quarterback Case Keenum floats or underthrows the football.
As for Quick, the Rams Talk staff across the board all agreed that Quick needed to be cut, and admittedly I was probably the biggest advocate of that. Quick proved us all wrong, despite having a terrible preseason. So how well has Quick has done this season? Well, he’s already passed his career high in receiving yards with a total of 405 yards, on 24 receptions and has three touchdown receptions.
Quick hasn’t been as consistent as Britt, but he has limited the amount of dropped passes too. It also appears that his speed has increased from last year. If he has an open field, defenders can’t catch him as we seen against the Arizona Cardinals. It’s difficult to pinpoint if the consistency issue is with Quick or with Keenum, but regardless just seeing him improve is beneficial to the offense.
As for the rest of the wide receivers, not a whole lot to talk about. Tavon Austin is the next most accomplished, but he hasn’t been consistent at all this season. Of course, his role once again is limited since Keenum can’t throw the ball accurately downfield. Still, he has had some success picking up 37 receptions, for 316 yards and two touchdowns. It’s difficult to fault Austin, but he truly isn’t earning his huge contract extension.
This just leaves Bradley Marquez, Mike Thomas, Pharoh Cooper and Nelson Spruce, all of which combined for a whopping total of 28 yards. To be fair, Cooper hasn’t played much due to injury and Spruce hasn’t seen the field at all during the regular season. Still, the Rams need these guys to step up if they want a shot at winning more games. The three wins the Rams have had is attributed to the defense and Quick and Britt. Kudos to them, however, this needs to change soon.
