One of the top stories around the league in recent days involves the Los Angeles Rams allegedly banning Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson from standing on the sidelines during games. Their reason for taking this action is apparently because Dickerson has been overly critical of the players on the roster. My question about this situation is this: have the Rams lost their minds?
To be fair, let’s get our facts straight. As of now, no one from the Rams organization has openly admitted to the banning. Initially, Dickerson left the person nameless, but Rams’ chief operating officer Kevin Demoff sent tweets assuring that Dickerson is always welcomed. Dickerson later named head coach Jeff Fisher as the banisher, and he vowed never to attend a Rams game “as long as Jeff Fisher is coaching.” Fisher denied the allegations and Demoff later contacted Dickerson and apparently cleared up the “miscommunication.”
Again, I ask, have the Rams lost their minds? Okay, so we’ll never know for certain what was said, and if there truly was a “miscommunication,” but why would this even remotely become an issue? Why would Dickerson lie about this if it isn’t true? It’s hearsay at this point, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t tarnish the Rams’ reputation, particularly Fisher’s.
First off, this is the NFL, and if the players don’t know going into the league that they will be openly criticized, they likely didn’t pay attention to the league. Ignoring the fact that Dickerson is entitled to his opinion, the younger athletes may want to pay attention to what this legend is saying. He is a Hall of Famer for a reason and knows a thing or two about football. They should be calling him for advice or any legend for that matter.
Again, we don’t know for sure what was said, but if Fisher did ban Dickerson, he truly needs to be fired. Not just for this situation of course, but for his overall failures with the Rams. Nearly five seasons with a losing record and he has the audacity to ban a legend/fan favorite? Dickerson is likely more welcomed to the Rams’ sidelines than he is, and if anything, he should take some notes.
We may not agree with everything that Dickerson or any legend for that matter says, but it is a given that they should be shown respect. It is absurd and an embarrassment that this is even a topic. This story is coming from a team that just relocated and is performing poorly, which doesn’t help the overall reputation. The damage is already done, but there truly needs to be a heartfelt apology, particularly from Fisher and not Demoff. Demoff is doing his job by trying to remedy the situation, but Fisher needs to own up to his mistake and apologize. Even if he felt he did nothing wrong, the honorable thing to do is apologize. In any case, I hope this is brought up during his performance review.
