On Sunday, August 12, the St. Louis Rams will kick off their 2012 preseason in Lucas Oil Stadium against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. Here are three things to keep an eye on as the Rams take the field on Sunday:
Sam Bradford
The Rams’ Sam Bradford is in a critical stage of his career. Most franchise quarterbacks take huge steps forward in their third year, and I hope that Bradford is no different. However, there are some things working against him. Bradford is operating under his third offensive coordinator in three years, and he has to somehow get over a season during which he took a beating.
Some football experts have claimed that Bradford has the tell-tale signs of David Carr Syndrome, which basically means that he’s unable to stay comfortable in the pocket. I disagree. Bradford had some problems last year, but I refuse to believe that his psyche is irreversibly damaged after just one season of taking a beating in Josh McDaniels’s offense. I’ll be keeping a close eye on Bradford this Sunday afternoon in hopes of proving that I’m right.
Wide Receivers
While the Rams will have a run-oriented offense this season, Bradford will need some help from his wide receivers this season if the team is going to be successful. I’m looking forward to seeing how the upgraded receiving corps performs in their first action of 2012. In particular, I want to see how well Danny Amendola, Steve Smith and Greg Salas play as they return from their injuries. I also want to know how well rookies Chris Givens and Brian Quick have adjusted to the NFL. We’ll get an idea of their progress on Sunday.
Michael Brockers
The Rams have been one of the worst teams in the NFL against the run throughout the past five years, which is why they drafted defensive tackle Michael Brockers in the first round of the 2012 draft. Sunday’s game will be our first chance at seeing if Brockers is the answer to this problem. If he establishes himself in the trenches, the Rams have the potential to finish the season with a defense ranked among the NFL’s top 10.
You can watch the Rams take on the Colts this Sunday at 12:30 CT on FOX KTVI. I look forward to seeing the team earn their first victory of the preseason.
Derek Ciapala has been a Rams fan since he was a child and the team was in Los Angeles. His favorite Rams moments include Flipper Anderson’s 336-yard receiving night against the Saints in 1989, and their miracle 1999 run to their first Super Bowl victory.
