2012-2016- The Fisher Era

St. Louis Rams sign second-round pick Brian Quick to 4-year contract

On Tuesday, June 12, the St. Louis Rams signed rookie Brian Quick to a four-year contract. Quick was the first of the team’s three second-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.

This really isn’t big news. Draft picks are being signed earlier than ever before thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement. However, this is significant. The Rams will need Quick to make an impact on the offense right away. They didn’t draft him to develop over the course of two or three years. They picked him for now. Any delays in signing his rookie contract would have slowed Quick’s progression both as an individual player and as a teammate.

The Rams have big plans for Quick. The 6-foot-4 receiver is expected to become Sam Bradford‘s go-to guy, especially in red zone situations. It was important for him to be signed by the time mini-camp was over so that his contract situation wouldn’t interfere with training camp. Now he can focus on learning the Rams’ system and forming some chemistry with Bradford. I have to believe that by getting his deal taken care of now, Quick will be prepared to play a major role in the team’s offense when the 2012 season starts.

In fact, Bradford has already taken notice of his new receiver. He had some great things to say about Quick when speaking to the media recently.

“It’s just extremely impressive watching him move,” Bradford said. “As big as he is, as tall as he is, he gets in and out of breaks really well. He’s fast as well.”

Seeing Bradford glow about his receiver shouldn’t surprise anyone. He’s the kind of person who would speak well of his greatest enemy in public. However, Bradford’s words are echoing other comments that have been coming out of Rams Park about Quick since before the draft. I like where this is going. I know there aren’t a lot of fans sold on him, but I think the Rams have found themselves a future No. 1 receiver. Getting him under contract before training camp is just the first step in helping him reach his potential.

Derek Ciapala has been a Rams fan since he was a child and the team was in Los Angeles. His favorite Rams moments include Flipper Anderson’s 336-yard receiving night against the Saints in 1989, and their miracle 1999 run to their first Super Bowl victory. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.
