The St. Louis Rams traded the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins on March 9. The Rams received three first-rounders (2012-2014) and a second-rounder from the Redskins.
This trade changes everything for the Rams. The team got four high level picks for moving down four slots in the draft. At worst, the Rams will select the fourth player on their draft board this year. I don’t think they could have found a better trade than what they got from the Redskins.
The only downside I can find from this deal is that Justin Blackmon and Matt Kalil will probably be gone by the time the Rams make their first pick. However, with LSU’s Morris Claiborne and Michael Brockers probably available at No. 6, St. Louis can still get a top-flight player to fill some holes on the roster.
I know the Rams are desperate for a playmaking wide receiver, but this is a deep draft. There’s no reason to believe that the team won’t find a player to fill that role in the second round or in free agency. The Rams do have some money available. Maybe they will go after Vincent Jackson or Marques Colston. Perhaps the team will re-sign Brandon Lloyd. All I know is that general manager Les Snead earned my trust by making this trade, and I believe he’ll find some help for quarterback Sam Bradford.
The most important part of this deal is that the Rams will be able to methodically build this team over the next three years. Most draft day trades don’t provide teams with the kind of flexibility this one gave St. Louis. For example, if the Rams don’t like how the 2013 Draft is set up, they can package their picks to move up or down without affecting the two first rounders they have in 2014. The team will be able to take everything one step at a time.
The Rams have the opportunity to build something special with the haul they got from the Redskins. If they can’t build a contender with five first round picks in the next three years, then they deserve to be at the bottom of the NFL. However, I don’t think that will happen. The Rams have a competent front office and coaching staff in charge for the first time in years, and I believe we’re about to see the team finally turn the corner.
