Report Card: A look at L.A. Rams rookie QB Jared Goff’s first start

Los Angeles Rams’ first overall draft pick Jared Goff finally got to start his first NFL game last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. What looked like his first win suddenly fell apart with 6:30 left in the fourth quarter, when the Rams defense blew a 10-point lead in a 14-10 defeat. However, the loss had nothing to do with Goff’s performance.

The fans in L.A. have been chanting Goff’s name, and they finally got their wish. While many critics are being hard on the rookie, I was very pleased with his performance. You can’t compare how Goff played compared to rookies Carson Wentz or Dak Prescott. Even though I thought that Wentz should have been the Rams’ choice, I’m not going to come down on Goff after one performance. Wentz and Prescott have practiced and played much longer with their No. 1 offenses.

Think about it, the Philadelphia Eagles traded away Sam Bradford and threw Wentz right into the starter role at the beginning of the season. Because of Tony Romo’s injury, Prescott moved into the Dallas Cowboys’ starter role in Week 1 as well. Goff sat for 10 weeks and has spent limited time with the No. 1 offense.

Goff showed more poise in the pocket than former starter Case Keenum. He made one mistake when he was sacked, but otherwise he looked completely composed. Pocket presence has been one of my main complaints against Keenum, so it was refreshing to see Goff handle it well. Goff completed 17 0f 31 passes for 134 yards and had no turnovers. The Rams employed a rather simple offense and never allowed Goff to throw it downfield. This is one of the reasons for the loss.

The Rams’ rushing attack has been limited this season, because of the lack of downfield passes. How could anyone expect it to change with Goff at quarterback, running a limited offense? Until the last minute of the game, Goff had only thrown three passes in the 10-19 yards range. Despite this, running back Todd Gurley managed to break off some decent runs, including the 24-yard scamper for a touchdown.

Penalties, stupid mistakes and a Lance Kendricks’ fumble also affected the game outcome for Goff. Again, Goff’s performance was far from stellar, but he did everything the Rams asked him to do. I see a lot of upside and hope he continues to grow this week against the New Orleans Saints.

Head coach Jeff Fisher waited too long to start Goff. Will it cost him his job? I would be surprised if it doesn’t. Hopefully it doesn’t take him too long to open up the offense and let Goff show us what he can do. What do we have to lose with a 4-6 record? If he wins, great! If he doesn’t, he will be more prepared for next season.

Grade: C+
