It took the Los Angeles Rams to finally address the ILB position in the seventh round. But with the 234th overall pick, the Rams selected Baylor’s Clay Johnston.
The Rams are extremely thin at ILB, but Johnston will likely serve primarily as a special teamer. One of the reasons he fell to the seventh round is because he’s coming off a knee injury. But there are other contributing factors such as: lacking quickness, a tad undersized and not particularly athletic.
Johnston is relentless and has the desired mindset to be competitor. Coverage is a bit underrated, but that’s mainly because he lacks the desired speed. His tackling skills are good and certainly understands the fundamentals of a good wrap-up tackle.
In five seasons with the Bears, Johnston racked up 237 tackles, 26.5 tackles for a loss, two interceptions and seven pass deflections. Last season, he earned 58 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, one interception and five pass deflections.
