The St. Louis Rams have agreed to trade quarterback Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Nick Foles. Both teams have reportedly swapped first round picks, and the Rams also receive further compensation as well, according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Along with Bradford’s departure is the last of his historical 2010 rookie contract, which now frees the Rams of nearly $13 million in cap space. Foles is also on the final season of his rookie contract worth about $1.362 million.
Bradford has been plagued with injuries since joining the Rams as a rookie. He is currently recovering from his second ACL tear in the last two years. The former Oklahoma Sooner couldn’t quite thrive in St. Louis, and his lack of success was thought to be for multiple reasons such as: lack of weapons, too many different offensive schemes, inconsistent offensive linemen and of course the injuries. In five seasons with the Rams, Bradford started only 49 of the possible 80 games, passed for 11,065 yards, 59 touchdowns and 38 interceptions.
Foles has had a little more success in the last three seasons he spent in Philadelphia. He made the Pro Bowl in 2013, after the Eagles shuffled through quarterbacks like Michael Vick and Mark Sanchez. So far, he has passed for 6,753 yards, 46 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
Foles is expected to add little more dimension to offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti’s offensive scheme. The Rams have added more explosive players over the past couple of seasons, and Foles could figure to be the missing element to make the current offense successful since he is a dual-threat quarterback. Time will tell if this investment in Foles will pay off.
The Rams have now freed up enough money to make a bit of a splash in free agency. Don’t think that general manager Les Snead is done trading; plenty of opportunities are still out there with the NFL Draft rapidly approaching.
