The Los Angeles Rams hired Chris Weinke as their quarterbacks coach last year upon promoting Frank Cignetti to offensive coordinator. Considering the quarterback carousel that happened last season, it’s difficult to evaluate Weinke’s influence.
Weinke attempted to coach quarterback Nick Foles to follow Cignetti’s failed offensive scheme. The end result was seeing Foles benched, Case Keenum becoming the starter and the Rams completing a mediocre 7-9 season. Weinke does not control the offensive scheme. His role is to mentor the quarterbacks to the best of his abilities. Perhaps Foles isn’t the best example since he wasn’t a good fit to begin with, but an argument can be made for how well Keenum performed. Keenum’s performance wasn’t flawless, yet he did provide the Rams with the best opportunity to win. While some of the credit does go to Keenum himself, Weinke should be mentioned as a factor for the former Houston quarterback’s improvement from previous years.
Although general manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher are adamant in saying that Keenum is still the starter, the reality is that rookie Jared Goff will likely be No. 1 on the depth chart by the time the regular season comes around. Weinke will be responsible for teaching Goff the fundamentals of an NFL offense and the quarterback position at a quick pace. He will also need to continue to working with Keenum, Foles and Sean Mannion just in case Goff struggles on the next level.
We’re not really sure what we are getting with Rob Boras’s offensive scheme. On one hand, he did a much better job than Cignetti, but on the other hand, Cignetti was an improvement over Brian Schottenheimer. The biggest difference is Goff is potentially a better overall quarterback than both Keenum and Foles. He adds the dimension of throwing the deep ball, and Weinke needs to boost his confidence in that aspect of his game. The Rams’ passing offense will improve immensely if Goff can master the vertical game. However, his deep ball ability will only get Goff so far. Weinke also needs to instill discipline and encourage Goff to be selective with his passes. The PAC-12 is a talented conference, but it still doesn’t have the elite talent that the NFL has.
Weinke did have some success at mentoring quarterbacks while at the IMG Academy. The academy teaches quarterbacks from various age ranges, but Weinke worked with current NFL quarterbacks such as the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, the Minnesota Vikings’ Teddy Bridgewater and the Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton. All three have amassed success in the NFL at this point. The Rams are counting on Weinke to prepare Goff for the NFL level.
