The St. Louis Rams made it a priority in the 2015 NFL Draft to address their glaring weaknesses along the offensive line by using four of their picks on offensive linemen, which included selecting Jamon Brown in the third round.
Brown is an unique player due to his experience playing at both tackle and guard during his collegiate career at Louisville. He was a three-year starter, spending his first season at right tackle and followed by two years at right guard. He earned All-ACC honors in his last two seasons as a starter.
The 22-year-old has excelled most playing at guard and is expected to make that transition in the NFL. Despite being athletically limited, Brown has the prototypical size for a guard at 6’4″ and 323 pounds. His stature combined with his quick feet and strength make him a logical fit at the position. He is also much quicker than expected out of his stance and is an effective straight-line blocker.
Brown’s selection is further proof that the running game will continue to be a major part of the Rams’ offense even with new offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. His presence should be beneficial to the team’s rushing attack on carries up the middle as they struggled last season to get significant yardage ranking 26th on run plays designed to go through the middle or guards with just 3.61 yards per carry average.
With the Rams looking to move forward with a young offensive line that will feature three new starters, Brown has been at the forefront from the get-go taking snaps with the first team since OTA’s through to training camp. He has also received much praise from the organization since the draft that includes the belief that he can become a Pro Bowl-caliber player.
Head coach Jeff Fisher has spoken highly of both Brown and Havenstein throughout the offseason, and he appears intent on starting both players come Week 1 of the 2015 regular season.

“You can look at our right tackle and our right guard right now and they look they’ve been here a for a while and that’s good,” Fisher said. “That’s good to have that feeling inside that you have confidence in both Rob Havenstein and ‘JB’ (Jamon Brown) that they can lineup and play and it shows with the pads on. They’re doing that, so there’s a lot of good things going on.”
St. Louis has had their fair share of misses on offensive linemen prospects over the years, including former tackles Jason Smith and Alex Barron, but the fact that the coaching staff has consistently voiced their excitement about Brown signals that he could develop into one of the staples along the offensive line for years to come.
