2015 NFL Draft Profile: Texas A&M OT Cedric Ogbuehi should not be looked as ‘damaged goods’

Looking back a couple of months ago, many experts would have seen Texas A&M’s offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi among the top offensive line prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft. Some scouts still credit Ogbuehi by ranking him in the top five offensive tackles in the draft, but his draft status has dropped considerably after he tore his ACL during the Liberty Bowl.

It’s doubtful that he’ll be ready to play by Week 1, but his talent level still has teams intrigued. He will likely be a day two prospect (second or third round). Should the St. Louis Rams be interested? Here’s a closer look at Ogbuehi:

Pros: If ever there was an example of a preferred body frame that teams look for in an offensive tackle, Ogbuehi fits the bill perfectly. He is a 6’5, 325-pound behemoth with amazing athleticism. His quickness would have dazzled scouts at the NFL Combine. If he is beat by a defender, he possesses the quickness to recover and salvage a play.

Ogbuehi is also versatile, which is a plus to any team. He is more suited to playing right tackle and guard and has experience at both positions while playing with the Aggies. Ogbuehi does have the strength required for both positions. His large hands help latch onto defenders and drive them back a couple of yards.

Cons: While Ogbuehi does possess great strength, his technique needs a little polishing, especially in terms of hand placement. Defenders often have access to his chest, which can knock him off balance or allow them to use swim moves. At times, he forgets to keep moving his feet and leans into defenders, which creates a lane for them to bypass him. He will also need to improve on setting himself lower off the snap.

While the ACL is an obvious concern, that’s not the only injury that scouts will look at. Ogbuehi really hasn’t stayed healthy since joining the Aggies back in 2011. Many teams will look at his injury history and shy away from drafting him too early.

Bottom line: It’s easy to brush Ogbuehi aside due of his injury, but a talent like him may be too good to pass up. The Rams clearly have a need at both guard and tackle, and adding him would improve the offensive line. However, if the Rams do draft him, they should expect him to sit out most of the season. General manager Les Snead will need to add other offensive linemen via free agency or even the draft.

If Ogbuehi can come back healthy, he is certainly worth the investment and could be a value pick if he falls into the third day of the draft. But the looming question will be, “is he injury prone?” The second and third round is a risk. In the fourth round. any team should jump at the chance to draft him.
