Week 5 NFC West preview: The division returns to action

All NFC West teams return to action in Week 5, and the battle for the top is only intensifying. The San Francisco 49ers were the sole team representing the division last week, and they sent a message to the entire league that read “don’t count us out just yet.” Beating an undefeated Philadelphia Eagles team will certainly bring respect back to the 49ers. Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks and the undefeated Arizona Cardinals are well rested and are on the prowl. The St. Louis Rams are also returning and will attempt to not find a new way to lose.

St. Louis Rams @ Philadelphia Eagles: The 49ers exposed the Eagles as a beatable team last week. That said, the Rams revealed that they aren’t capable of holding a 21-point lead two weeks ago against the Dallas Cowboys. The chances of a Rams’ victory are still pretty slim; now is a good time for “Sack City” to emerge from its slumber. If the Rams can pressure Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, this can be a close game. Still, it won’t matter much if the defense cannot limit the running game. Running back LeSean McCoy has been slowed by injuries, but Darren Sproles is more than capable of punishing the Rams’ defense too.

The Rams will most likely have the services of second-string quarterback Shaun Hill. It’s still unclear if Hill is the better option over Austin Davis. Running back Zac Stacey will aim to improve on the ground and the Eagles’ defensive front might make that a possibility. After all, 49ers’ running back Frank Gore rushed for 119 yards against the Eagles after he had been struggling.

Prediction: 35-24, Eagles.

Arizona Cardinals @ Denver Broncos: The Cardinals have found ways to win. They haven’t been pretty, but they are still getting it done. Losing star players like DE John Abraham, DE Darnell Dockett and QB Carson Palmer hasn’t mattered much. Palmer is expected to return against the Broncos, and just in time because he brings a better deep ball than backup Drew Stanton can, though the former Michigan State quarterback did a decent job during Palmer’s absence. The Broncos rank near the bottom of the league in passing defense, surrendering an average of 285 yards per game. If running back Andre Ellington surpasses 100 yards rushing, it could be a long game for the Broncos.

Peyton Manning has been sharp so far this season, but he has struggled in the past against the elite Cardinals’ secondary. The Broncos must get something going on the ground as well. Running back Monte Ball almost needs to have a productive outing in order for the Broncos to win. It’s almost a shock to write this, but the Cardinals have a legitimate chance at winning the Broncos this Sunday.

Prediction: 31-28, Cardinals.

Kansas City Chiefs @ San Francisco 49ers: The Chiefs and the 49ers are difficult teams to analyze. The Chiefs just came off an impressive win against the New England Patriots and the 49ers also won against the Eagles. Since they both own a 2-2 record, they both will be trying to use the momentum to get back over the .500 mark.

The 49ers will need to protect quarterback Colin Kaepernick in order for him to perform as well as he did against the Eagles. It might be a tall order for the Niners’ offensive line to block the impressive Chiefs defensive front. One player that might help is the long-awaited return of tight end Vernon Davis. One more weapon will help the entire 49ers offense, especially since he is the end zone threat the team has been lacking. The 49ers must have an answer for Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis, who have quickly become the top running back rotation in the league. 49ers running back Frank Gore will be instrumental to success or downfall of the team.

Prediction: 23-21, 49ers.

Seattle Seahawks @ Washington Redskins: The Redskins need offensive help. The Redskins need defensive help. The Redskins need a miracle against the Seahawks. After being embarrassed by the New York Giants last week, the Redskins might feel more pain with Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch running through their defensive line. Expect Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson to have a huge game as well.

Can Robert Griffin III play injured? Anything is better than what Kirk Cousins displayed last week. The way the ‘Skins struggled against the Giants’ secondary last week has to have the Seahawks’ secondary salivating. Look for the Redskins to put the ball in running back Alfred Morris’s hands early and often. At least the game isn’t at Century Link Field, and that is optimism at its finest.

Prediction: 45-13, Seahawks.
