2016-Present

Player Profile: CB Coty Sensabaugh is a known competitor

Fans were underwhelmed when the Los Angeles Rams signed cornerback Coty Sensabaugh earlier in the 2016 offseason. It’s understandable since the team had just lost Janoris Jenkins, and Sensabaugh isn’t really considered on the same level as Jenkins. That’s not to say that Sensabaugh can’t improve under different coaching and a change of scenery. After all, his entire football career has been an uphill battle. Here’s a look at his collegiate and professional career thus far.

Clemson University (2008-2011)

Sometimes it’s a blessing to be recruited by a top-tier SEC school such as Clemson, but that honor doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Naturally, in order for Clemson to stay competitive, they need to constantly recruit top talent, and Sensabaugh was waiting in the background for an opportunity to start. He really didn’t start until his senior year, and not much tape was given to scouts. Still, his athleticism was intriguing, and showed he was capable of covering some of the top receivers in the SEC. During his senior year, Sensabaugh recorded 48 tackles, one interception and 13 pass deflections. While those aren’t breathtaking numbers, they were good enough for a team willing to take a risk on him in the later rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Tennessee Titans (2012-2015)

The Titans drafted Sensabaugh in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. It’s hard to expect too much from a rookie, especially one with as little experience as Sensabaugh had. Yet, he managed to find ways to get on the playing field. His tackling ability and his natural athleticism allowed him to play on special teams and eventually seen more playing time.

Although he started on occasion, it wasn’t enough for the Titans to keep him as a regular starter, and only started 12 of 43 games from 2012-2014. The 2015 season was different. The Titans may have not been a defensive juggernaut, but they believed in Sensabaugh enough to become a starter for 15 games. He finished the year with 42 tackles, eight pass deflections and two interceptions.

Los Angeles Rams (2016)

Once again, Sensabaugh finds himself in yet another uphill battle. He isn’t guaranteed a starting position. We already know that Trumaine Johnson secured one of the starting roles. One of the key position battles will be between Sensabaugh and E.J. Gaines. If Gaines returns healthy and to his original form, it’s going to be extremely tough for Sensabaugh to win the competition. But, if he takes the knowledge that he has learned in his short career, along with some coaching from defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, he will make this an extremely tough and interesting competition. Don’t give up on Sensabaugh just yet, he is a proven fighter.
