Week 4 NFC West roundup: Division still alive and strong

The NFC West began Week 4 early on Thursday night when the San Francisco 49ers traveled to St. Louis to take on the Rams. The 49ers avenged last season’s loss in the Gateway City by dominating the Rams, 35-11. The 49ers improved their record to 2-2 while the Rams dropped to 1-3.

Meanwhile, the birds of the division each had nail-biting victories against their opponents. The Arizona Cardinals denied Mike Glennon and the Tampa Buccaneers of their first victory (13-10), which improved their record to 2-2. The Seattle Seahawks rallied back from a slow start in Houston and won in overtime against the Texans, 23-20. The Hawks remain undefeated with a 4-0 record.

Team Notes:

  • San Francisco 49ers: Colin Kaepernick had 167 passing yards and two touchdowns. Anquan Boldin accumulated 90 receiving yards and one touchdown on five receptions. Frank Gore ran through the Rams’ defense gaining 153 yards on the ground and had one touchdown. NaVorro Bowman and Corey Lemonier stepped up replacing superstars Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith. Both terrorized the Rams’ offense with a combined total of 10 tackles and two sacks.
  • St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford passed for a total of 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Rams only had 18 total rushing yards; Daryl Richardson led the team with 16 rushing yards on 12 attempts. The defense allowed 219 yards on the ground. James Laurinaitis led the team in tackles with 12.
  • Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals scored all 13 points in the fourth quarter including the game deciding field goal by Jay Feely with 1:29 left in the game. Carson Palmer threw for 248 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The running game was stalemated to a mere 56 total yards. The defense pressured the rookie quarterback Mike Glennon all game and had a total of 11 tackles for a loss. Patrick Peterson capitalized off the pressure and intercepted the ball twice.
  • Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson was limited to 123 passing yards and one interception. Wilson gained 77 yards on the ground. Marshawn Lynch bulldozed through the Texans’ defense for a total of 98 yards and one touchdown. Richard Sherman returned an interception 58 yards for touchdown to send the game into overtime. Steven Hauschka kicked the game winning field game.
