Ten weeks down, seven more to go. The Arizona Cardinals are one week closer to the playoffs, but their victory over the St. Louis Rams came at the cost of losing quarterback Carson Palmer for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks woke up in the fourth quarter to win against the New York Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers survived a tough game against the New Orleans Saints.
Here’s a look at the Week 11’s NFC West games:
Denver Broncos @ St. Louis Rams: Once again, the Rams played a solid game against a quality team like the Cardinals, but just completely fell apart in the fourth quarter. The problem is the Rams can’t seem to find the endzone, and if they continue with this trend, they may as well chalk up another loss against an elite team like the Broncos. Quarterback Austin Davis has made some poor decisions, which have come at the expense of the Rams. The inconsistency of the offensive line hasn’t helped matters either. The receivers need to step up if the Rams don’t want to be humiliated in St. Louis.
The Broncos shouldn’t have a hard time scoring, considering that the Rams’ secondary is banged up. Rookie LaMarcus Joyner injured his groin during last week’s game, and the Rams cannot afford to lose yet another contributor to the secondary. Expect Peyton Manning to drive up and down the field throughout the game. That said, Manning and the Broncos’ offensive line should be wary of the awakening of “Sack City.” It can be a painful experience, just ask Carson Palmer. The increased pressure probably won’t affect the outcome though.
Prediction: 42-16, Broncos.
Seattle Seahawks @ Kansas City Chiefs: The Seahawks will be leaving the comfort of home to visit the hostile environment at Arrowhead Stadium. Last week, the Seahawks scored 21 of their 38 points in the fourth quarter. That won’t happen against the Chiefs. At this point, it may just be better to hand the ball off to running back Marshawn Lynch every offensive snap. He burst through the Giants defense for 140 yards and four touchdowns last week. My only question is what took head coach Pete Carroll so long to place the football in Lynch’s hands?
The Seahawks defense must also prep for the strong ground attack of the Chiefs. Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis can easily change the flow of the game if they establish a rhythm. Alex Smith may not be an all-pro quarterback, but he can hurt defenses in many ways if they provide him with enough time or open space to work with. It’s not looking good for Russell Wilson though since he has to face the likes of Justin Houston, who leads the league in sacks with 12.
Prediction: 24-21, Chiefs.
San Francisco 49ers @ New York Giants: Applause is in order for the 49ers, because they played an amazing game against the Saints. Their latest road trip foe is the Giants, and despite their loss to the Seahawks, this isn’t a team to sleep on. Last week, the 49ers offense didn’t really have an impressive outing, because they basically capitalized off of turnovers committed by the Saints. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick only completed 44 percent of his passes for 210 yards and one touchdown. He needs to be a little more consistent, though he shouldn’t have an issue with the Giants. With much of the Giants’ offense banged up, Eli Manning doesn’t stand a chance against the 49ers’ physical, ball-hawking defense.
Prediction: 28-17, 49ers.
Detroit Lions @ Arizona Cardinals: It’s almost a tradition to place these two teams near the bottom of league every season, but these unlikely teams wield some of the best records in the NFL in 2014. This Sunday will prove which team is the true contender, but the Cardinals may have gotten off to a bad start already. Palmer’s absence does hurt morale, but it may not end the season for the Cardinals. Backup quarterback Drew Stanton took the reins of the Cardinal offense earlier this season led them to a 2-1 record. However, the rest of the offense will need to set up too. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald cannot disappear on Stanton. The offense cannot only rely on running back Andre Ellington to pick up the win over a team like the Lions.
The Lions have improved in many different areas and has one of the best defenses in the NFL. The main objective for the Cardinals is to protect Stanton. The Cardinals’ defense will also have a difficult job in trying to cover not only Calvin “Megatron” Johnson but also the emergence of Golden Tate. Matthew Stafford has found plenty of success thanks to those receivers, which means cornerback Patrick Peterson will need a repeat of last week’s performance and limit the amount of penalties called on him.
Prediction: 23-17, Cardinals.
