Heading into the Los Angeles Rams’ 2016 training camp, a position that will be overlooked is running back. The Todd Gurley effect is alive and well, but what about the depth? There is no doubt that Gurley will be the workhorse, but he can’t do everything.
Now that we’ve all witnessed what Gurley is capable of, the important thing for him is to remain healthy. That’s easier said than done when it comes to football, but it’s something for the Rams to consider as they begin to put on the pads. Gurley is entering his second season, and there is always room for improvement regardless of how good he is. Establishing chemistry with the offensive line should also be a top priority. This will no doubt help the Rams later on if done properly, because the offensive unit is so young.
Behind Gurley is Benny Cunningham, who is a dangerous weapon when used properly. Cunningham will need to work closely with newly appointed offensive coordinator Rob Boras in order to find a proper fit for him. He was criminally underutilized last season, but could be a real asset to rookie quarterback Jared Goff if he becomes the starter. It would certainly benefit the team if Cunningham was used more to catch passes in the backfield.
Who comes after Cunningham is a mystery. There are significant concerns about Tre Mason. The reality is, there’s good chance he won’t be on the roster. He will likely face suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, and he missed the entire OTAs due to an arrest back in March. The Rams may have been able to look past this if he had performed well last year, but he didn’t. In fact, it was an awful year for him. Now that he is behind in this offseason program, the Rams will have to decide if he’s even worth keeping on the roster. In other words, he may put some work in during training camp, but that might not mean much if he doesn’t perform well beyond expectations.
So that leaves Chase Reynolds, and the majority of his experience in the NFL has been with the special teams. It’s likely he will return for the same role, but if the Rams don’t expand his role, they could choose to allocate his spot for one of the many undrafted free agents.
Among the young players competing for a roster spot are Malcolm Brown, Terrence Magee and Aaron Green. Their performance will likely determine Mason’s fate with the Rams. If one of these guys outperforms their expectations, they will run away with the roster spot. This will be competition to watch for, especially when preseason comes around.
