Top 5 things to watch for on ‘Hard Knocks’

The reality sports documentary Hard Knocks will feature the Los Angeles Rams for the 2016 season, and it is set to debut on Tuesday, August 9. Normally, the drama ventures into the personal lives of the players and coaching staff, covers position battles and some fun moments created by the team. It will be no different this year as the Rams make their return to L.A. Here are the top five things to watch for from Hard Knocks:

The Move

You don’t have to be a fan from L.A. to be intrigued about how this move will impact the Rams. Obviously there is more to moving an NFL franchise than just playing football in a different city. The Rams had to pack up everything from St. Louis to Los Angeles, which means finding a new training facility, a new headquarters for the team offices, and homes for the relocated players.

The first year of the move will probably be the toughest year, and it will likely be covered extensively by Hard Knocks. Seeing how veterans and rookies adjust to their temporary facilities could make some excellent reality T.V. coverage, but if they bring in the Kardashians I am changing the channel – sorry.

Jared Goff

General manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher essentially staked their jobs on the success of rookie QB Jared Goff. It’s hard enough for a rookie to adapt to the NFL level, but add in the pressure of being the No. 1 overall pick, the Rams giving up the farm to draft him, playing with an extremely young offensive line, and dealing with Hard Knocks’ cameras pointed at his face the entire learning process. That equals pressure.

If Goff can survive all of that, I have no doubt in my mind that he can be a great quarterback. Still, it’s quite a lot to ask for a rookie. Love the pick or not, Goff will likely be the Rams’ starting quarterback. It will be interesting to see just exactly how he will handle all of these pressures, and if he can live up to the hype. Goff’s talents do provide a new dimension on the offensive scheme.

Offensive scheme

Speaking of the Rams’ offensive scheme, Hard Knocks will provide a glimpse of newly-appointed offensive coordinator Rob Boras’s scheme. One of the biggest controversies this offseason was deciding to hire in-house, despite firing Frank Cignetti in the middle of last season, who was an in-house hire as well. In Boras’s defense, he did run the offense toward the end of last season and the offense did run much more smoothly.

Also, this team is built for a power running game, but the addition of Goff changes things. Goff provides an element that the Rams haven’t had since a healthy Sam Bradford: a deep passing game. Finally, receiver Tavon Austin will have a chance to showcase his abilities, because passes from the likes of Shaun Hill, Austin Davis, Case Keenum and Nick Foles certainly didn’t help matters. This offense has the potential to be decent if ran effectively.

Position battles

One of the selling points of Hard Knocks is the position battles. The Rams do have several key position battles to look out for. The quarterback battle between Goff and Keenum should be exciting. Goff may have been the No. 1 overall pick, but that doesn’t mean the Rams will just hand over the starting role. Keenum also has everything to lose, so don’t expect him to let Goff take it without a fight.

Another key battle will be at cornerback between E.J. Gaines and Coty Sensabaugh. It’s clear that the Rams wanted Trumaine Johnson as their top corner, but with Janoris Jenkins bolting for New York, this opens up a starting role. Gaines is coming off a season-ending foot injury last season, but if he picks up where he left off, the spot is likely his. Sensabaugh could use this opportunity to prove himself and may tap into his potential to secure a starting spot.

L.A. life

Since Hard Knocks is known for getting involved in the personal affairs of players and coaching staff, it will be interesting to see what they all do on their off time. California has plenty to offer in terms of adventuring. The nightlife especially can be intriguing to these young athletes, but it can also be a forbidden temptress, causing nothing but legal troubles if they don’t watch themselves.

Southern California may be known for their nightclubs, beaches and Hollywood, but I think the players and people that live outside the state will be surprised how much more the region has to offer. Players come from all different backgrounds and have different values so it is certain that these guys will find something fun to do. Of course what will likely be covered, is the more controversial side of entertainment, so grab your popcorn.
