2012 First Round (14th overall): LSU DE Michael Brockers
Brockers’ team leadership, strength as a run defender and tenure with the franchise puts him at the top draft pick for 2012. Drafted by the St. Louis Rams out of LSU, the 6’6,” 255-pound defensive end showed promise. Brockers also added 50 pounds to better match his opponents. Alongside Quinn and Chris Long, he helped start a trend of stout, sack-happy defensive linemen. The addition of Aaron Donald in 2014 made them an even more potent squad.
Brockers has spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Rams. He has a career 344 tackles (43 for a loss), 23 sacks, 52 quarterback hits, nine passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Brockers almost left the Rams in March after working a deal with the Baltimore Ravens. In a crazy turn of events, his contract fell through with the Ravens due to concern over an ankle injury suffered late in the 2019 season. As a result, he is back on the roster with a new contract in addition to recent acquisition and former Detroit Lions defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.
The Rams are glad to have Brockers back. Brockers posted a career number of tackles (63) in 2019. His numbers may go up again in 2020. Kicker Greg Zuerlein was also drafted the same year. He could have also been up for top draft pick of 2012. If we could split the number one spot, Zuerlein would be there for sure, especially after pulling through for the special teams over the years on numerous occasions. His clutch 58-yard field goal that put the Rams in the Super Bowl LIII will never be forgotten. Unfortunately, he was inconsistent in 2019 and recently signed to the Dallas Cowboys.
