The Super Bowl is returning to Los Angeles for the first time in nearly 30 years.
The NFL awarded Super Bowl LV to the City of Angels during its spring meeting on Tuesday, May 24. The game will be held at the new home of the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, California in February 2021.
Both Atlanta and Miami were awarded Super Bowls as well, but Los Angeles hosting the game is probably the most significant news of the day. The L.A. metropolitan area has not hosted a Super Bowl since January 1993. The city used to hold the game once every four to five years on average. Rams owner Stan Kroenke expressed confidence in the Super Bowl’s return to L.A.
“They had Super Bowls there regularly before there was no team, so with our new stadium and project, it will be unbelievable,” Kroenke said. “I’ve been asked about it a lot when I was in Los Angeles. Everyone’s excited.”
The return of the Super Bowl to L.A. was made possible by the Rams’ move back to the city after 21 years in St. Louis. The Inglewood project is expected to be ready for the 2019 season.
