The St. Louis Rams added former Miami Dolphin wide receiver Damian Williams and promoted offensive guard Brandon Washington from the practice squad on Wednesday, October 29. Both transactions were reported earlier today out of Rams Park.
Williams was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round (77th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft. Williams started this season with the Dolphins until he was released on Saturday to make room for the returning Dion Jordan. The move comes just days after the Rams announced that wide receiver Brian Quick sustained a season-ending rotator-cuff injury. The USC product does have some experience playing under head coach Jeff Fisher during his time with the Titans and is familiar with his play calling.
The five-year wide receiver earned a career total of 1,327 yards and five touchdowns with his best season occurring in 2011, which is when he started 13 games and caught 45 passes for 592 yards and all five of his career touchdowns. He only has one reception for 14 yards this season. Williams is expected to provide much needed depth to the Rams’ receiving corps and serve as a returner on special teams.
Washington has primarily served on the Rams’ practice squad and has only appeared in one game in his three-year career. Washington’s promotion was due to left tackle Jake Long’s season-ending ACL tear. Rookie offensive lineman Greg Robinson is expected to shift from guard to left tackle which is why Washington is needed for depth purposes.
The Rams placed Quick on the injured reserve and released rookie cornerback Jemea Thomas in order make room for Williams and Washington.
