The Los Angeles Rams look to extend Jeff Fisher’s contract

The Los Angeles Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher have begun talks on a contract extension, as first reported by ESPN. The Rams are looking to lock up Fisher before he enters the final year of his contract at the start of the 2016 season.

The move may come as a surprise to Rams fans as well as football fans altogether. Fisher has had a 27-36-1 record since taking over the team since 2012. He posted a 7-8-1 record in his first season with the team and hasn’t been able to put up a better record since. Fisher’s overall career record is 169-156-1, which includes five playoff wins in six appearances and an AFC Championship. His last playoff win came during the 2003 NFL Season.

Despite the negativity surrounding Fisher’s tenure from fans, it should be noted that he’s made a few positive marks on this franchise. The Rams were a dismal 15-65 during the five years before Fisher’s arrival. His draft selections have been more than stellar, most notably the selections of Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley despite the lack of need at either position. He had a hand in the Robert Griffin III trade as well.

Most importantly, Fisher was the head coach of the Houston Oilers during their transition from Houston to Tennessee in 1997. He took the rebranded Titans to the Super Bowl within three years of the move. This experience should prove vital to the Rams offseason process this year.

There are plenty of positives and plenty of negatives in the idea of extending Fisher. But fans should not overlook the stability factor, as going through a coaching change tends to be a bumpy ride.
