In a perfect world, no NFL team will ever have to use a backup quarterback. The St. Louis Rams can quickly dismiss that optimistic thought considering starting quarterback Sam Bradford has been plagued with injuries throughout his 4-year career. It’s vital that teams have savvy veteran quarterbacks on hand, who are capable of taking the reins of the team and leading them to victory. This is why the Rams brought in former Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill.
Last season’s backup quarterback Kellen Clemens signed with the San Diego Chargers, which left the Rams without an experienced backup on the roster. Clemens did a solid job last season, but he did let a few winnable games slip through the cracks. Hill owns an impressive resume from his years spent with the San Francisco 49ers and the Lions. The transition between reserve quarterbacks won’t be as difficult, because Hill is also a proven veteran.
One thing is for certain, the Rams would much rather have Hill as an ally instead of an enemy. Hill is 4-0 while playing against the Rams with 808 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Hill’s experience captured the attention of the Rams, which is why they snatched him up early on in free agency. It was also too early to tell whether or not Bradford would be fully recovered from his torn ACL by the start of the season. The Rams needed to be confident in someone to step in and become the starter at a reasonable price.
It’s also important to note that Hill has not started a game since 2010. He recorded the best season of his career in 2010 when he replaced Lions’ starting QB Matthew Stafford for 10 games. He finished the season completing over 60 percent of his passes for 2,686 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
That valuable experience may come in handy if Bradford has any setbacks in recovering or if he were to become injured once more. Austin Davis and Garrett Gilbert are also competing for a spot on the roster, but it isn’t known if head coach Jeff Fisher or general manager Les Snead will run with two or three quarterbacks.
The Rams are poised to make a run for the playoffs in the 2014 season. This is why it was important for the Rams to invest in a veteran like Hill. The NFC West is stacked with talent and deep rosters will also play a role in the race to win the West.
