Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary confirmed in an interview that he will join the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff as a defensive assistant for the 2016 season on Tuesday, June 28. It is expected that Singletary will serve as a defensive assistant.
Singletary served on former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan’s coaching staff before taking over for the fired Nolan in 2008. He was relieved of his duties following an up-and-down three seasons at the helm of the 49ers. Singletary then took over as the Minnesota Vikings’ linebackers coach from 2011-2013. He has not coached since then.
The Rams have struggled to play disciplined football throughout the Jeff Fisher Era. Singletary will bring discipline and toughness to an already solid defense.
Singletary remains one of the best middle linebackers to ever play the game. He played 12 seasons for the Chicago Bears from 1981 to 1992. Singletary earned 10 Pro Bowl berths and seven First Team All-Pro honors. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
