The St. Louis Rams have reportedly re-acquired quarterback Case Keenum from the Houston Texans for their 2016 seventh round pick. The Rams have also re-signed tight end Lance Kendricks to a four-year deal believed to be worth about $18.5 million, according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The move comes not too long after the Rams lost backup quarterback Shaun Hill to the Minnesota Vikings. The addition of Keenum may solidify the Rams’ corps of quarterbacks. Austin Davis was tendered earlier this week, which means he will likely become the immediate backup and Keenum right behind him. It isn’t clear if the Rams plan on adding any more quarterbacks to heighten the competition.
Keenum was added to the roster when the Texans cut him just before the start of the 2104 regular season. He never made it on to the field and was cut from the Rams before the season ended. The Texans then signed him again, leading to today’s trade. Keenum does have some knowledge of the Rams’ offense, which could help if Nick Foles or Davis sustains any injuries.
Regardless of which quarterback will be taking the snaps, the Rams wish to have plenty of weapons at their disposal and proved that by re-signing Kendricks. He spent last season in a reserved role behind starting tight end Jared Cook.
Kendricks has battled some nagging injuries in the past four seasons in St. Louis, but when healthy, he has been among one of the favorite targets. His numbers were down last season though, with 27 receptions for 259 yards and had five touchdowns.
Foles was known for using his tight ends while in Philadelphia. If he can get Kendricks more involved, he could be the end zone threat that the Rams hoped for when they drafted him.
