NFC West Week 2 Preview: Smooth sailing for most of the division

If anyone needed proof just how tough the NFC West division is this season, take a glance at the winners of Week 1. The Seahawks are looking like they are gunning for another Lombardi Trophy, the San Francisco 49ers played with a chip on their shoulder, and the Arizona Cardinals could prove to be a factor in the playoff hunt once again. As for the St. Louis Rams, they need to improve tenfold if they want to be competitive in this division. Here’s a look at the NFC West’s Week 2 opponents:

Arizona Cardinals @ New York Giants: It’s true that the Cardinals barely squeaked a victory over the San Diego Chargers, but it’s safe to say that they will have a much milder opponent this week against the Giants. Quarterback Eli Manning cannot play like he did in Week 1, tossing two interceptions to a subpar Lions’ secondary is inexcusable and the Cardinals’ secondary are already salivating at the opportunity for some interceptions.

The Giants’ secondary must actually cover Cardinal receivers. They cannot leave WRs Larry Fitzgerald or Michael Floyd as open as they did with Detroit Lions WR Calvin “Megatron” Johnson or they will suffer another embarrassing loss. Bottom line is the Cardinals have too many weapons, and the Giants need to find their identity as a team.

Prediction: 28-14, Cardinals.

St. Louis Rams @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers: To say that the Rams underperformed during their Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings is an understatement. Making matters worse, the Rams may have to start their third string quarterback Austin Davis in place of an injured Shaun Hill.

This week, the Rams take on the Bucs at home. Tampa Bay struggled in their first game,  primarily on the defensive side of the ball. It all really depends if the Bucs can establish pressure against the Rams’ offensive line, which shouldn’t be too difficult with the way they have been playing. The Rams’ defense needs to step up and knock the confidence out of quarterback Josh McCown. Both teams will probably struggle on the offensive side of the ball, but things aren’t looking promising for the Rams on the road.

Prediction: 17-13, Buccaneers.

Seattle Seahawks @ San Diego Chargers: The San Diego Chargers just came off a tough loss against an NFC West opponent, the Arizona Cardinals, and now they have the task of facing yet another team within the division, the Super Bowl defending Seattle Seahawks. Who did the scheduling and why do they hate the Chargers? Okay, so the Cardinals barely won, but the way the Seahawks dominated the Green Bay Packers in the season opener probably is an indication that it won’t be much better for the Chargers as well.

Phllip Rivers will face the stingy Seahawks’ defense, but at least he won’t have to worry about the Seahawk’s 12th man. Expect running back Marshawn Lynch to pound the ball in the end zone a time or two. QB Russell Wilson doesn’t necessarily have to have a big game; the Chargers are just too outmatched to come out of this game with a win.

Prediction: 34-17, Seahawks.

Chicago Bears @ San Francisco 49ers: Prior to Week 1, this game appeared to be a potential NFC Championship game. After watching how both teams performed last week, that potential matchup is a bit less realistic. It is still early in the season, but the rushing defense still appears to be problem for the Bears, and quarterback Jay Cutler isn’t making the best decisions. Making any such mistakes against the 49ers’ defense will result in points on the scoreboard.

We cannot overlook the fact that the Dallas Cowboys rallied back in the second half. The Niners may have come up the win, but they can’t do that against tougher opponents like the Bears. If they don’t finish the game against the Bears, they will capitalize and steal the win. The 49ers offense will be the deciding factor in this game. If the rushing attack can expose the Bears’ weaknessess, this game will belong to the 49ers.

Prediction: 27-24, 49ers.
