Is Sean Payton a fit for the Rams?

Despite reports in recent days that New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has no plans on leaving after letting go of essentially his entire coaching staff, he remains a possible target of the Los Angeles Rams front office for their head coaching position.

Payton is an offensive mastermind who turned Drew Brees into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. In his time with the San Diego Chargers, Brees struggled at times passing the football and did not become one of the NFL’s elite until he signed on with Payton and the Saints.

For 10-plus seasons in New Orleans, the duo of Payton and Brees have torched opposing defenses with a simple but elaborate philosophy to keep offense consistently near the top of the NFL. What Payton figured out in New Orleans was to run a more modern, elaborate version of Bill Walsh’s West Coast offense where passing was priority number one above all.

Why would the Rams be interested in a coach whose teams have missed the playoffs the last three seasons? We, he’s still a Super Bowl-winning head coach. His offensive genius is what propelled an otherwise struggling New Orleans Saints franchise to heights never seen before in their franchise history. Credibility is urgent right now for the Los Angeles Rams franchise, because not only is the team losing, they are boring. The Rams did not look competitive as a ball club this season, and in the final four games of the season, it appeared to checked out mentally. Payton would certainly help remedy all three of those problems the Rams suffered in 2016.

Let’s be honest here, Jared Goff struggled during his rookie season, even if it was not all his entire fault. Former head coach Jeff Fisher stunted his development from the get-go, and his firing further derailed an already difficult rookie campaign.  He looked overwhelmed most of the time in the pocket, often holding onto the football one second too long. As a result, his confidence was shaken. Bringing in a coach like Sean Payton could not only restore the confidence he lost this season, but help develop Goff into a reliable NFL quarterback.

It is clear that with the coaching candidates that have been floated around in the media in recent weeks, the Rams want a dynamic, offensive mind running the show in L.A. The question remains, if someone like Sean Payton is hired, will the front office be willing to bring in personnel needed to be competitive in Payton’s offensive system?
