2016-Present

The L.A. Rams trust neither Sean Mannion or Jared Goff

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff showed some flashes of consistency in Preseason Week 2, going 16-20 for 16o yards and a touchdown in a victory over the Oakland Raiders. Last Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Goff of 2016 reared his ugly head once again.

In the 21-19 loss, Goff committed two critical turnovers, leading to 14 Chargers points. With the Rams down 7-0 and entering the red zone, Goff got blindsided by Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa, fumbling the football and resulting in a 76-yard return for a defensive touchdown. The next series featured a horrid Goff pass thrown to Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett for the interception.

Based on how the Rams ran the football the next nine plays once they went back on offense, it was clear that McVay’s confidence in the second year QB was shaken.

When backup quarterback Sean Mannion entered the game, the Rams offense came to life on his first four passes – all completions. Unfortunately, even Mannion went cold at times early in the second half showing inconsistencies in the passing game.

It is more than clear that while Goff and Mannion are showing improvement this year, neither are wowing the Rams coaching staff. While Goff continues to make plays that remind the Rams why they drafted him, the former Cal quarterback keeps making the same mistakes as last season. He waits too long in the pocket to make a pass or throw the ball away. Goff also struggles to read defenses and sometimes telegraphs his passes to opposing secondaries.

Mannion, on the other hand, looks a bit more composed in the pocket and does not commit many turnovers. The problem is he remains highly inconsistent and lacks the accuracy Goff possesses.

Jared Goff is not expected to play in the team’s final preseason matchup against the Green Bay Packers, so Mannion has one final chance to overtake the former No. 1 overall pick as the Rams starting quarterback. The problem is that Mannion has just as many flaws in his game. The Rams have a problem deciding between the two quarterbacks. Goff has the edge, but in the end, it will come down to the quarterback that grows up the most in the coming days.
