There are multiple positions that are underappreciated in the NFL, but that doesn’t mean that those positions are irrelevant to a team. For Cory Harkey of the St. Louis Rams, he plays two underappreciated positions: blocking tight end and fullback.
Harkey was an undrafted free agent out of UCLA as a blocking specialist. One of the reasons he went undrafted was because he didn’t have much experience as a receiving tight end. He was exclusively used for blocking purposes during his time with the Bruins. This was unfavorable for his draft stock since the NFL is a pass-friendly league.
The Rams picked up Harkey as an undrafted free agent in 2012 to become the lead blocker in the tight end corps. His role expanded to become the team’s starting fullback, but he is capable of lining up at the line of scrimmage if an injury occurs to fellow tight ends Jared Cook or Lance Kendricks. Harkey specializes in run blocking, and he is also a good option to pick up defenders against the pass. He plays aggressively and does well to stick with defenders.
Harkey doesn’t have incredible receiving abilities, but he has improved to the point where offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has provided him with more receiving opportunities. Harkey increased his receiving totals from only one reception in 2012 to 13 receptions and two touchdowns a year later. Harkey stands at 6’3” and can be an unknown threat to teams if he steps up his receiving game.
2013: Harkey missed the first game of the season due to a slightly fractured leg he sustained during the offseason. He recovered quickly and had a season total of 113 yards on 13 receptions and had two touchdowns. He started 10 of the 15 games he participated in.
2012: As a rookie, Harkey barely saw the field. He only participated in five games and did not start any of them. Harkey was primarily used in blocking situations and made his first and only reception of the season in Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings for 21 yards.
