To start out this weeks column, I’d like to tip my hat and salute my fellow Josh Gordon owners. It’s been one hell of an emotional roller coaster for us. I was very excited about the prospect of Gordon’s long awaited return this season. I drafted him in four leagues, and decently high as well. It was the perfect storm of offseason hype – the Browns brought in an offensive guru and Gordon’s old college quarterback and the NFL finally reinstated him with a four game suspension.
I thought the stars had aligned and after his performance in the preseason. I was ready for All-Pro level Gordon to join my lineup. In my mind, I was taking a top 10 receiver after I had already drafted my entire starting lineup. Gordon was going to save my teams after Week 4 and bring us to the promised land…
…but the ride is over. Gordon checked into rehab this week and the Browns announced their going to move on and develop their young and talented tandem of Corey Coleman and Terrelle Pryor. It’s unlikely that Gordon will play at all this season.
I’m happy for Josh Gordon. I hope he comes out of rehab like a new man ready to put his past behind him. He’ll come back. He has too come back. He’s too talented of a player for nobody to take a chance on him. And when he does, I’ll be waiting in the eighth round with an open roster spot waiting for Flash. Until we meet again, Josh Gordon.
Anyways, here are a few guys you should consider starting or sitting this week.
Starts
Terrelle Pryor, WR, Cleveland – All the chaos thats happened to Cleveland this season just means more and more opportunity for Terrelle Pryor. He’s currently the only triple threat player in the NFL. He runs, he passes, and without Coleman and Gordon, he’s the number one option in the passing game. Owners who picked up Pryor on waivers should be ecstatic about it.
Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh – Big Ben owners don’t need to panic. Despite a rough game against Philadelphia and a tough matchup against Kansas City this week, Roethlisberger is still a must start. Le’Veon Bell being back will give everyone on the offense a boost and Big Ben will be just fine.
Orleans Darkwa, RB, New York Giants – Darkwa is by no means a must start, but for owners in a sticky situation at running back he makes for a solid play. Darkwa is the only back on the active roster who’s gotten real carries with the team and is likely going to be fed this week. He’s a decent flex play for owners without great options.
Jamison Crowder, WR, Washington – Last season Crowder put up quietly solid numbers and this year is no different. In PPR leagues, Crowder is really a solid flex. He’s seen at least seven targets every game this season and has a touchdown in two of the last three games. Crowder is only owned in half of Yahoo leagues and is a nice pickup for owners looking for a plug and play guy.
Jimmy Graham, TE, Seattle – Graham finally had a breakout game last week, racking up 100 yards and a touchdown. This week he’s got a decent matchup against the Jets, who gave up 89 yards and a touchdown to Travis Kelce last week. Graham has the talent to be an elite fantasy tight end, and is still productive when Seattle calls his number. I’d continue to ride the Graham train this week.
Sits
Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants – Eli has had a brutal two weeks since beating Dallas opening week. With a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings this week, it’s hard to imagine Eli having his comeback game against one of the best defenses in football.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City – I always advise against starting guys who are being eased back in from an injury. Similar to Rob Gronkowski last week, Charles will likely be used as a decoy this week. Give him a week to get back to form before starting him.
DeAngelo Williams, RB, Pittsburgh – Just because Williams has been putting up career high numbers when Bell is out doesn’t mean he’s going to get the ball when Bell is in. He’s the top handcuff in fantasy, but still merely a handcuff.
Tavon Austin, WR, Los Angeles – I predicted on our podcast last week that Austin would have a big game against Tampa Bay, and he delivered with his first touchdown of the year at a crucial moment. But Austin owners know how sporadic he is. He’s a 20 or 2 guy, meaning he’ll either get you 20 points or 2 points. Austin needs to be owned strictly for his potential to blow up every week. With a matchup against Arizona in Week 4, I’m not betting on Austin to put up back to back great games. The consistency just still isn’t there.
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Tennessee – Sharpe has been getting a lot of buzz since he’s become the de facto best fantasy option in the Tennessee passing game. He’s got the targets, but he doesn’t have the production. He should be able to put it all together at some point this season but I’m not confident enough to start him at the moment.
