I won’t lie, this is the first time in my 12-year fantasy football career that I’ve actually had to pay attention to fantasy football in Week 17. I’m not a huge fan of playing this late into the season personally, but anybody who is checking at this point has to simply be worried about winning their championship. Here’s a couple names to watch out for in Week 17.
Starts
Jaquizz Rodgers, RB, Tampa Bay – The prodigal son returns. Rodgers was a key part of many people’s fantasy seasons this year and has returned to deliver us a championship. He’s scored double-digit fantasy points in each game he’s played where he’s received double digit touches. He even ran for over 100 yards the last time he played the Panthers. Rodgers is without a doubt a RB1 in a weird fantasy week, and any owners that grabbed him off the waiver wire may celebrate with a championship.
Steve Smith Sr, WR, Baltimore – This Sunday will be the final game of Steve Smith’s career, and there’s no doubt that he will leave it all on the field. Smith helped many including myself win a championship last week with a dominant showing in his penultimate game. He’s found the end zone in each of his last two games, and I’m sure he’ll see it one final time on Sunday. Smith makes for a solid flex play this week.
Ty Montgomery, RB/WR, Green Bay – Last week was a tough pill to swallow for Montgomery believers. But I put some of the blame on Montgomery’s performance on the Minnesota defense. Their run defense came to play and their pass defense did not. Even though he only had nine carries, he still had five more than his backfield mate Christine Michael. Montgomery’s upside is just too good to pass up this late in the year. I expect him to bounce back in the final game of the 2016 regular season.
Charles Clay, TE, Buffalo – A quarterback switch is concerning for everybody involved in the Bills passing game, but I find it hard to bench Charles Clay right now. He’s scored four touchdowns in the past three weeks and will likely be a red zone target no matter who is throwing him the football. Keep rolling with the hot hand and fire up Charles Clay in your championship this week.
J.J. Nelson, WR, Arizona – J.J. Nelson is just an absolute boom or bust player at this point. He’s one big play away from solid points, but doesn’t always get that big play. But you know who loves giving up big, broken plays? Your Los Angeles Rams! Believe in the inevitable 60-yard Nelson touchdown this week! Let it ride, it’s do or die time!!
Sits
All Dallas Cowboys – This includes both the starters and the backups. We genuinely have no idea how much playing time the Cowboy starters are going to receive. It could be four quarters or it could be four plays. I’d be willing to guess they’d only play for a quarter or two, which doesn’t bode well for fantasy owners on either side of the coin. Stay away from the Dallas offense this week.
All Houston Texans – The Texans are in a similar situation, except they happen to boast some of the most inconsistent fantasy players in the entire league. If we can’t trust DeAndre Hopkins for 16 meaningful games, why would we trust him in this meaningless one?
DeAngelo Williams, RB, Pittsburgh – Tread lightly before starting DeAngelo Williams this week. While this one seems like a no brainer, Williams has had success with the Steelers in large part due to the people around him. Big Ben and Antonio Brown won’t be playing this week, and it’s likely the Steelers front five won’t be pushed as hard as usual this week. He’s still decent as a low end flex option in deeper leagues, but don’t go benching your studs and expect what Williams usually puts up when he starts. It’s an unusual situation for Williams in Week 17.
Allen Robinson, WR, Jacksonville – Allen Robinson has been one of the most frustrating players in fantasy football this year. Anyone that managed to survive to Week 16 despite drafting Robinson probably didn’t start him for one of his best games of the year last week. It’s hard to trust a guy who just went four straight weeks without double digit PPR points in the fantasy championship, even coming off a great performance. I’d stay away from him this week unless I was truly desperate.
Jared Cook, TE, Green Bay – There’s no better player to end my Starts & Sits for the year than with Jared Cook. When Cook signed with Green Bay this offseason there was a lot of hype. He was going into a great system with a great quarterback that could put his talents to use. Maybe Jeff Fisher wasn’t using him right? Maybe it was the quarterback play in St. Louis that caused Cook’s production to diminish? Maybe the Rams offense failed Cook, rather than Cook failing the Rams offense?
Well Rams fans, we won this one. The world got to see once and for all the truth about Jared Cook. Yes he has physical gifts and yes on paper he should be one of the best tight ends in the league. But when it comes to being an NFL caliber starting tight end, Jared Cook just simply isn’t. He gets lazy. He drops passes. He’s not a great run blocker. Cook just doesn’t cut it in this league, which is why Richard Rodgers still has to exist.
Cook shouldn’t be in your lineup. He should have never been in your lineup. And he probably won’t need to be in your lineup ever again. If there’s one thing Rams fans can be happy with this season, it’s that this guy isn’t on our team anymore.
I’ll be back during the playoffs with a season wrap up article. Thanks for reading all season long, and hopefully my advice helped!
