2020 NFL Draft profile: Baylor WR Denzel Mims

Thinking back, it’s difficult to imagine that the Los Angeles Rams would be interested in a wide receiver during 2020 NFL Draft. However, the Rams shopped Brandin Cooks around and eventually traded him to the Houston Texans. Receiver is probably sufficient enough with the current depth. However, could a prospect like Baylor’s Denzel Mims entice the Rams to select a receiver? They have already interviewed him after all.

College Stats and Honors:

2019: 66 receptions, 1,020 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

Career: 186 receptions, 2,925 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns.

Honors: First-Team All-Big 12 (2019)

Strengths:

To begin with, Mims is among one of the more desirable prospects in terms of NFL Combine stats, size and appearance. Standing in at 6’3″ and weighing about 215 pounds, Mims is certainly a target that QBs will love to have on their team. He is a pure athlete, evidence is his 4.38s 40-yard dash and 6.66s three-cone drill times. That’s not even including 38.5″ vertical jump and 10-11 broad jump.

Mims produced right away, which says a lot coming from high-powered offense of Baylor. He’s one of the more entertaining receivers with some of his circus catches. Don’t believe me? Just watch his catch during the 2020 Sugar Bowl. The way he maintains concentration and body motions on some catches are phenomenal.

One of the most impressive aspect of Mims’s game is his burst off snap. In some of his film, it’s like he catches defenders by surprise, which makes him an effective slant option. He’s big enough to handle contact and doesn’t mind catching the ball in the middle of the field.

Weaknesses:

Quite possibly the most glaring part of Mims’s game is the amount of drops he had with the Bears. He made some unbelievable catches on one play and dropped passes that hit him right in the numbers on other plays. He tends to play a little high, this didn’t effect him too much in the collegiate level, but NFL corners will take advantage with contact and it will make a huge difference on the next level. Essentially, he relies on speed to get passed defenders. This could be a problem because many of the talented NFL receivers use juke moves and fakes to beat defenders. Also, drafting any receiver from Baylor tends to be an issue due to their lack of emphasis in route-running.

Expected Draft Round:

Before the NFL Combine, I think Mims could have gone in the second round, but he will likely be a mid-late first round pick. I suppose anything is possible with a surplus of talented wide receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft, but not likely he falls into the second round. If the Rams want a shot at Mims, they would need to trade into the first round.

In truth, if the Rams can draft Mims, they should make it happen. Not only is he a talented player, but he fits the current offense quite well. The Rams surrendered Cooks not just because of his contract, it’s because of how the offense is designed now. They will be utilize more short-to-mid range passes, which is something Mims excels at. Top that off with him being a decent-sized target in the end zone, and the Rams could have another reliable receiver. Receiver may not be a top need, but Mims is a special player the Rams shouldn’t pass up on.
