2017 NFL Draft: The Los Angeles Rams go defense with the 91st pick- DB John Johnson

The Los Angeles Rams decided to go for defense with the 91st pick, taking DB John Johnson tonight in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. Johnson has starting experience as cornerback and safety for Boston College, which could help him find a role with a Rams’ defensive secondary. Considering the Rams lack quality depth at both positions, this pick makes sense. Here are Johnson’s NFL Combine numbers:

Johnson, 6-feet-0 and 208 pounds, has great instincts and ball tracking skills. He lacks elite speed, but his other physical attributes make up for it. He made an impact last season, intercepting three passes and making 77 tackles, including 12 in a 36-30 victory over Maryland in the Quick Lane  Bowl.

He is looking forward to playing for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. “My excitement level was through the roof,” he said, “I think I’ll fit right in.”

He may not step right into a starting role, but after a few years under Phillips, that may change quickly. This is another quality pick by the Rams.
