Breaking down the 2015 St. Louis Rams schedule

Football fans can rejoice. No, it’s not the beginning of the regular season. The NFL Draft is not here yet either. The NFL announced the dates to all of the regular season games. It’s safe to say that the nation is ready for some football and St. Louis Rams fans were just as eager to see the official schedule. The following is a game-by-game breakdown of the regular season schedule:

WEEK 1 – Sunday, Sept. 13 @12:00 p.m. CT: Seattle at St. Louis

Quarterback Nick Foles will be tested early in the season when he will attempt to lead the Rams past the “Legion of Boom.” An early NFC West matchup is never an easy task, especially when it’s against the defending NFC Conference Champs. The Rams’ defense will also need to keep a watchful eye on Russell Wilson since he now has tight end Jimmy Graham in his arsenal.

WEEK 2 – Sunday, Sept. 20 @12:00 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Wshington

Question of the game: will head coach Jeff Fisher have another taunting coin toss? This game is a “must-win” for the Rams, because it doesn’t get any easier as the season continues. It’s doubtful that the Rams will have another shutout against Redskins on their home turf. Establishing the ground game will be necessary in order to leave Washington with a win.

WEEK 3 – Sunday, Sept. 27 @12:00 p.m. CT: Pittsburgh at St. Louis

The Rams will return home to face the Steelers. Home field advantage is nice, but expect the Steelers to try and pound the defense with their ground game. Le’Veon Bell will present a challenge, but don’t factor out “Big Ben.” The Rams did struggle against mobile quarterbacks last season. This will be a tough game, but certainly winnable.

WEEK 4 – Sunday, Oct. 4 @3:25 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Arizona

The Rams scored a combined 20 points last season against the Cardinals’ defense. The offense needs to put more points on the scoreboard if they want to beat the Cardinals at least once this season. Foles may play a crucial role in this game because the Rams will need to be able to move the ball through the air.

WEEK 5 – Sunday, Oct. 11 @12:00 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Green Bay

This will likely the toughest game thus far in the season. The Rams defensive line will need to be in the face of Aaron Rodgers throughout the game. If Rodgers becomes remotely comfortable, the Rams will likely not beat the Packers. The Rams’ ground attack will need to be active too.

WEEK 7 – Sunday, Oct. 25 @12:00 p.m. CT: Cleveland at St. Louis

Coming back from a bye week to face the Browns is certainly a gift. This game should boost the morale, but it’s best not to underestimate any team in the NFL. Still the Rams shouldn’t lose to the Browns at home. Consider it a lost season if the Rams can’t win this game.

WEEK 8 – Sunday, Nov. 1 @12:00 p.m. CT: San Francisco at St. Louis

It’s hard to predict what kind of season the 49ers will have, but it’s likely that they won’t be the same team. Regardless, the Rams will still need to watch Colin Kaepernick. At least the Rams don’t have to worry about Frank Gore.

WEEK 9 – Sunday, Nov. 8 @12:00 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Minnesota

The Rams do not need a repeat of last season’s opener. It’s true that the Rams had some quarterback issues that game, but the entire team played terrible. The defense can’t allow 34 points and the offense needs to score much more than six points. The Rams will need to take advantage of this game, because the schedule will get tougher.

WEEK 10 – Sunday, Nov. 15 @12:00 p.m. CT: Chicago at St. Louis

The Bears were easily one of the most disappointing teams last season, but so were the Rams. The secondary will be challenged and it’s important for the offense to challenge the Bears’ secondary too. The winning factor of this game is the team that presents the best aerial assault.

WEEK 11 – Sunday, Nov. 22 @12:00 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Baltimore

This is the part of the season where those wins and losses against the weaker opponents matter the most. Playing against the Ravens on the road is no simple task and the Rams’ running game will need to have a presence. No ground game will likely result in a loss.

WEEK 12 – Sunday, Nov. 29 @12:00 p.m. CT: St. Louis at Cincinnati

A second consecutive AFC North team on the road at this point in the season just seems unfair. It is reality though, and containing receiver A.J. Green is the top priority. The best chance for the Rams to win is if the receiving game is on par. The Bengals struggled particularly against the pass last season, and the Rams do have the potential to become an aerial threat.

WEEK 13 – Sunday, Dec. 6 @12:00 p.m. CT: Arizona at St. Louis

The Rams return home only to face a tough NFC West matchup against the Cardinals. Still the game is at home, so if there was one game in the series that the Rams should win, it is this one.

WEEK 14 – Sunday, Dec. 13 @12:00 p.m. CT: Detroit at St. Louis

Defensive tackle Nick Fairley will face his former team. Foles will still need to watch for newly acquired Haloti Ngata. The Rams’ defense are sure to have their hands full with Matthew Stafford and Calvin “Megatron” Johnson. Not an easy win by any means.

WEEK 15 – Thursday, Dec. 17 @7:25 CT: Tampa Bay at St. Louis

It’s imperative that the Rams win this game, because it’s all NFC West opponents after this game. Besides, it is a primetime game and it would be nice to see the Rams win on national television. The Bucs are likely not going to the playoffs, but they won’t mind spoiling any chances that the Rams might have.

WEEK 16 – Sunday, Dec. 27 @3:25 CT: St. Louis at Seattle

It’s never easy to win the Seahawks especially when you factor in their “12th man.” The importance of this win will depend on what the Rams did earlier in the season. Pete Carroll wants another shot at the Super Bowl and he will have the Seahawks prepared for this week.

WEEK 17 – Sunday, Jan. 3 @3:25 CT: St. Louis at San Francisco

It’s entirely possible that the Rams’ playoff hopes can ride on this game. Either way, the 49ers would like to end their season on a high note. If the Rams can put up a decent amount of points, the Rams could escape San Francisco with a win and hopefully a run at the playoffs. Let’s hope that this isn’t just wishful thinking.
