2019 L.A. Rams preview: The biggest questions at every position

Safety: How much Taylor Rapp will we see?

After trading back in the 2019 NFL Draft about 4,000 times, the Rams finally settled in at 61 and selected Washington safety Taylor Rapp. Rapp finds himself in an interesting position. While the primary safety spots are filled by John Johnson and newcomer Eric Weddle, there is an opportunity on the team elsewhere on defense.

When Mark Barron missed the first four games of last season, the team opted to replace him with two guys: inside linebacker Ramik Wilson and safety Marqui Christian. While Wilson’s role disappeared once Barron returned, Christian stuck around and was able to carve out a role as a hybrid linebacker-safety. With Barron out of the picture, it seems like the Rams will once again explore this method with Micah Kiser and either Christian or, more likely, Taylor Rapp. He’s going to have a shot to be an impact player on defense from day one despite having no chance of starting at free or strong safety.

The Los Angeles Rams will report back to L.A. for training camp on July 27th.
