Week 3: Los Angeles Rams hold off rival San Francisco 49ers in 41-39 victory

The Los Angeles Rams held off the San Francisco 49ers 41-39 on Thursday, September 21. The Rams moved to 2-1 and into first place in the NFC West.

San Francisco fought back from deficits throughout the night and nearly pushed the game into overtime. An interception on a two-point conversion preserved the 41-39 lead. Moments later, the 49ers recovered an onside kick to put them in position to win the game.

The Rams defense responded. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald put the game away by sacking 49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer on 4th and 20 to regain possession late. Los Angeles ran out the clock preserving the 41-39 victory.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff completed 22 of 28 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Robert Woods caught two of those touchdowns and recorded six receptions overall for 108 yards. Sammy Watkins picked up six catches for 106 yards. Rams running back Todd Gurley compiled a recorded a big night. He rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Gurley also caught three passes for 36 yards and a score.

Hoyer completed 23 of 37 passes for 332 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the 49ers. His favorite target, Pierre Garcon, caught seven passes for 142 yards in the loss.
