The Los Angeles Rams expressed concern for third-year running back Tre Mason on Saturday, July 30, after he missed the beginning of training camp this week. Mason has kept his distance from the team since the end of the 2015 season, and he has also faced some legal issues as well.
The Rams reacted to Mason’s absence by placing him on the reserve/did not report list, which allows the team to not count him against its 90-man roster. However, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher noted that they team is worried more about Mason on a personal level at the team’s press conference on Saturday.
“It was our only option,” Fisher said. “I haven’t personally spoken with Tre since the [2015] season ended – when we had out check-out physicals. I tried numerous times after the incident to reach him, and I was unsuccessful. Been communicating through the offseason with his agent, Bus Cook, had minimal conversation with family members. But Tre has made a decision not to communicate with us – not to talk, not talking with his teammates.”
It’s concerning that Mason has walled himself from the team he has played for since entering the NFL. Mason’s teammates are the people that he has gone to war every week for two years, and it is strange that he would cut off contact with him. Add in the his recent arrest on drug and traffic charges, and there are significant red flags surrounding Mason.
Tre Mason may have lost his starting job to Todd Gurley, but he is an extremely talented running back, who could still make a huge impact on the Rams offense. A three-headed monster comprised of Gurley, Mason, and Benny Cunningham could decimate opposing defenses on a weekly basis. However, it’s Mason’s life that is more important than any dream NFL offense. Football is secondary to real life, and it always will be.
