Things to watch for during ‘Hard Knocks’

Once again, the Los Angeles Rams will be featured in HBO’s hit football series, “Hard Knocks.” A show that captures a team’s training camp and almost places a human element to an NFL team.

This year, “Hard Knocks” will feature the Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers as they prepare for the 2020 season and settle in their home, SoFi Stadium. The Rams were featured back in 2016 when they made their debut back to Los Angeles. This will be the Chargers first appearance on the show.

With all the excitement of both teams debuting in their new home and the uncertainties that’s coming with 2020 season, there’s plenty of things to look for on “Hard Knocks.” Here are some of the major categories:

SoFi Stadium… Duh!

Let’s be real, one of the main reasons to watch “Hard Knocks” this year is because of SoFi Stadium. Even fans from other teams must be curious of the multi-billion dollar stadium project. This stadium took many years to begin developing. On top of that, it seen many hurdles from uncommon rainfall patterns in SoCal and even a pandemic! That’s just bad luck.

Despite that, we’ve seen teasers and sneak previews and fans around the league are ready for the unveiling. It looks absolutely stunning, so it will be interesting to see how much air time the stadium will have and if we can see a little football played.

Rams vs Chargers, Rivalry?

Historically speaking, the Rams and the Chargers really don’t have much of a rivalry. The Rams have plenty of rivals in the NFL, but the Chargers aren’t really a team that comes to mind. This might change a bit moving forward. Training camp got a little chippy last season between both teams.

It’s not clear just how much both teams will scrimmage during “Hard Knocks,” but at some point, both teams will interact. If the intensity of last year’s interaction carries over to 2020, this could make for some interesting content for “Hard Knocks.”

COVID-19 Precautions

Much like with just about everything else, COVID-19 likely altered “Hard Knocks’s” plans. The amount of contact and interaction will likely be limited for the safety of the players, coaching and other personnel. This will certainly be coverage that “Hard Knocks” has never aired before, so expect to see plenty of safety measures.

Likewise, this is something new for the NFL too. Both the Rams and the Chargers will be looking at different safety measures than in past years. We even seen in a trailer with head coach Sean McVay addressing the team with a face shield. That’s likely only the beginning.

Camp Battles

In recent years, “Hard Knocks” doesn’t go into every positional battle into depth. However, we can expect them to focus on the rookies and a few meaningful battles. Though, some of that coverage will likely be taken away since “Hard Knocks” is featuring both L.A. teams.

The Rams have plenty of camp battles in general. Add in the fact that the Rams have new offensive and defensive coordinators, and this should be interesting seeing the different personas.

Comedic Moments

While we all enjoy football enough to watch a show about the behind the scenes of NFL teams, one of the best reasons to watch “Hard Knocks” is funny moments from some of the players. It’s entertaining watching Jared Goff determining where the sun rises. Or William Hayes question the existence of mermaids and dinosaurs. If we’re being honest, that type of content is much more entertaining than most of the other “stuff” shown on TV today.

“Hard Knocks” makes its 2020 debut tonight at 7:00 p.m. PT on HBO.
