The St. Louis Rams selected Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick with the 33rd pick of the 2012 NFL Draft on Friday, April 27. The Rams further upgraded the offense by drafting Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead later in the second round.
Brian Quick
I was completely surprised by the Rams’ decision to take Quick. I expected the team to select LSU’s Rueben Randle or perhaps Stephen Hill from Georgia Tech in the second round. I had hoped that the Rams would take Hill, but after seeing how much due diligence the team did for this pick, I’m fine with it.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Jim Thomas weighed in on the Rams’ selection of Quick on Twitter. He wrote, “Quick was the fifth of the five wide receivers the Rams who engaged in private workouts last weekend. He blew the team away with his workout.”
Knowing that the Rams brought in five different receivers and were impressed by Quick gives me some peace with the decision. He might have struggled at the Senior Bowl, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. What small-school kid wouldn’t be nervous at a major NFL pre-combine scouting event? I know I would be.
Quick has the size (6’4 and 220 pounds) that makes most scouts drool. He did a great job making plays downfield in college, and I expect him to develop into that kind of receiver in the NFL.
Isaiah Pead
Since I live in Cincinnati, I have the local perspective on running back Isaiah Pead. Rams fans, don’t worry about this pick. Pead is an explosive talent who will give the Rams playmaking ability both out of the backfield and on special teams. I doubt that he will ever be a featured back in the NFL, but I think Pead is the ideal player to team with Steven Jackson. If he can get 10-15 carries a game, it might just help extend Jackson’s career. Overall, Pead seems like a reach for some fans, but I think he’s going to be a huge part of the Rams’ offense in 2012.
Derek Ciapala has been a Rams fan since he was a child and the team was in Los Angeles. His favorite Rams moments include Flipper Anderson’s 336-yard receiving night against the Saints in 1989, and their miracle 1999 run to their first Super Bowl victory. You can follow him on Twitter @dciapala.
