Quinton Coples looking for a fresh start with the L.A. Rams

The Los Angeles Rams added some depth to the defensive line after the exit of Chris Long when they signed former Miami Dolphins defensive end Quinton Coples this offseason. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the fifth year defensive end recently signed a two-year, $9.75 million incentive-based contract with a base salary of $6.5 million.

Coples is expected to perform as a rotational defensive end in head coach Jeff Fisher’s 4-3 defense as a backup for Robert Quinn, Eugene Sims, and William Hayes. The Rams are confident that this is low-risk/high-reward type of signing will add much-needed depth after Long’s departure  to New England. At 6’6” 290 pounds, his size and speed are major assets if he could adapt to defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’s defensive system.

For his first few years with the Jets, Coples was used as a pass-rushing linebacker in the 3-4 defensive scheme. While the Rams play a 4-3, Coples appears to be a better fit for defensive end, due to his height and weight. “Coples, we think is probably better suited with his hand down and rushing in and even front type of thing,” Fisher said. Fisher believes that putting him closer to the line of scrimmage will give him a better opportunity to get to the quarterback where he just could not find his footing years prior. As a member of the Jets, Coples was used as a pass-rushing linebacker in the 3-4 defense. While the Rams play a 4-3, Coples appears to be a better fit for defensive end, due to his height and weight.

Coples will not have the same amount of pressure in Los Angeles, because Fisher wants to use him as a rotational position player between defensive end and at defensive tackle when necessary. Coples is in a low pressure situation where he is not the focus of the Rams defense. “Between his willingness, lack of production, and his willingness to spend with the coaching staff, I think he will translate into a solid production for us as a backup end,” Fisher said of Coples. He played sparingly with the Jets and Dolphins in 2015, recording only 8 tackles and no sacks.

This is a critical point in Coples’s career. He failed to live up to expectations in New York as a high draft pick. He has to work with defensive line coach Mike Waufle to adapt to the Rams defensive system quickly. Coples will not have the same amount of snaps that he had compared to his first few years as a member of the Jets. However, if Coples can adapt to the 4-3 in Los Angeles, he can salvage his once promising NFL career.
