The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Oakland Raiders 24-21 on Saturday, August 19 to improve to 2-0 thus far in the 2017 preseason.
Rams second-year quarterback Jared Goff played for four series looked comfortable behind center. He completed 16 for 20 for 160 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Goff started off well, connecting on his first four passes during the team’s opening drive and culminating in a 23-yard touchdown pass to rookie Cooper Kupp to give L.A. the early 7-0 lead.
After the Raiders tied the score with a passing touchdown from Raiders starting QB Derek Carr, running back Todd Gurley capped off another solid series by Goff and the offense on a tough two-yard touchdown run. The Rams led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 17-14 at the half.
Sean Mannion took over for Goff in the second quarter, and the Rams offense continued to look efficient, at least in the short passing game. Mannion went 15 of 22 for 132 yards and one touchdown. With the Rams trailing the Raiders 21-17 late in the fourth quarter, Mannion led the team downfield for the game-winning score, capped off by a 20-yard touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds to give L.A. the 24-21 victory. Rams coach Sean McVay was satisfied with the effort on the offensive end Saturday night.
“It seemed like we were able to get in a pretty good rhythm,” McVay said. “I thought Jared did a great job making good decisions.”
Goff and Mannion were mostly limited to short passing on Saturday, but they looked efficient with the football. The two quarterbacks combined for 282 passing yards, while the overall offense controlled the ball for 36:26. The challenge for Goff and Mannion is to continue to show this consistency and improve on what was done Saturday.
The Rams’ next preseason game is Saturday, August 26 when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 5:00 p.m. PT.
