Fantasy Football 2016: Week 6 starts & sits

Last week, I had some solid calls and some brutal misfires. I’m more confident in my picks this week. Here are my starts and sits for Week 6.

Starts

Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City – Lock and load Charles owners. I’ve got a good feeling about this week. It’s clear that Charles won’t be as valuable as many owners expected with the emergence of Spencer Ware, but Charles is at full health and is too good of a player to be not involved in the offense. In his first week back, Charles warrants RB2 consideration and is a great flex play at worst.

Martellus Bennett, TE, New England – It may seem obvious at this point to start Bennett, but I just wanted to apologize to my readers and to Bennett himself. I wasn’t a believer in him as a true fantasy TE1. Bennett had three touchdowns in his first game playing with Tom Brady. He’s a start even with Gronk in the lineup.

Robert Woods, WR, Buffalo – Another player I listed in my sits last week, Woods was deserving of that title last week. But he’s got a solid matchup against San Francisco this week and is still the No. 1 option in a shaky Buffalo passing game. I’m expecting Woods to see a large amount of targets like he did in Week 4, and I think he’ll be a solid flex play.

Brian Hoyer, QB, Chicago – I covered Hoyer in my starts last week, but he needs to be mentioned again. He is a legit low end QB1 option. He has at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of his three starts, and he’s completed over 75% of his passes in his last two starts. Jacksonville’s defense has been improved this season, not allowing a 300 yard passer yet, but still has given up at least two passing touchdowns in three of four outings. Owners should continue to ride the Hoyer train.

Tennessee Defense – The poor Cleveland Browns. They’ve had four quarterbacks suffer injuries just five games into the season and there’s a decent chance that Terrelle Pryor lines up under center for them in Week 6. And by the way, they’re playing the Titans. That’s the defense you want to pick up and play this week.

Sits

Seattle Defense – ESPN and Yahoo each have Seattle as a top five defense this week. I’m here to be the voice of reason against playing this weekly start. Here’s a few reasons why:

  1. They’re playing Atlanta, the No. 1 offense in the league.
  2. The best offense they’ve played this year is the New York Jets, who are 14th in total yards and 24th in points per game.
  3. They’ve already played three of the worst eight scoring offenses in the league.
  4. Sure, they own the No. 1 one defense in the league at the moment, but they’ve played against Ryan Tannehill, Case Keenum, Blaine Gabbert, and Ryan Fitzpatrick. The quarterback in this group with the highest QBR just got benched.
  5. Atlanta has literally the first good offense they’ve faced this year.

Pick up somebody else this week. You’ll thank me later. I’m putting all my chips on this call.

Matt Forte, RB, New York Jets – After starting the season with absurd usage levels, Forte has been quiet since destroying Buffalo in Week 2. He has a tough matchup against Arizona in primetime. Most of us aren’t deep enough to be able to bench Forte, and that’s fine, there’s still a decent chance he has a bounce back week. But any owners with a bit of depth behind Forte should give someone else a shot.

Golden Tate, WR, Detroit – I still see Golden Tate in some fantasy lineups and it baffles me. My fellow Tate owners need to come to the realization that he’s done as a fantasy option this season. We’re five games into the season and Tate has yet to put up 50 yards in one game, let alone score a touchdown. Unless something drastic happens in Detroit he’s droppable in most leagues.

Tavon Austin, WR, Los Angeles – Austin shows plenty of flashes every game, but he just hasn’t put up viable fantasy numbers this season. Austin’s only had over 100 total offensive yards once this season with just one touchdown, and that was all in the same game against a bad Tampa Bay secondary. He’s a fringe flex play in PPR leagues at best and doesn’t warrant much consideration in standard leagues.

Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia – The high praise for Ertz this week in the fantasy community confuses me. He’s played in two games all year, hasn’t scored a touchdown, and just hasn’t been that great of a fantasy option throughout his career. I don’t see how he’s a top 10 option this week. He’s simply just a desperation play until we see a breakout performance, and I don’t expect it to happen against Washington.
